Serbia protests continue as police use tear gas against crowds demanding Vucic’s resignation and early elections amid corruption allegations. Serbia has witnessed escalating antigovernment protests as demonstrators continue to demand early elections and the resignation of President Aleksandar Vucic, who has been in power for 12 years. In the city of Novi Sad, police resorted to tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowds, marking another intense day of dissent.
Protest Triggered by Tragedy and Alleged Corruption
The unrest gained momentum after the fatal collapse of Novi Sad’s train station roof last November, which claimed 16 lives. The tragedy has become a symbol of public frustration, with citizens blaming government negligence and corruption for the incident. Thousands of demonstrators have since voiced anger over alleged mismanagement of state infrastructure and called for a change in leadership.
Tensions Escalate During Mass Demonstrations
On Friday, protesters gathered at the university campus in Novi Sad, chanting slogans demanding Vucic’s departure and the holding of snap elections. Police intervened using tear gas and stun grenades after some demonstrators reportedly threw flares and bottles. According to reports, 11 police officers were injured, though the number of civilian injuries remains unclear.
President Vucic defended the actions of law enforcement, stating, “We are not going to allow destruction of state institutions. Serbia is a strong and responsible state.” He also accused foreign entities of influencing the protests and announced that his supporters would hold rallies nationwide on Sunday.
History of Nationwide Protests
The protests, which have lasted over ten months, began largely peacefully but have occasionally turned violent. On August 13, clashes across several cities resulted in injuries to both civilians and police. Demonstrators allege that violence has often been provoked by government loyalists and heavy-handed police tactics, citing incidents of unprovoked beatings and mistreatment in custody.
Allegations Against Vucic and Government Response
Students, opposition parties, and anticorruption organizations have criticized Vucic and the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) for alleged links to organized crime, suppression of media freedom, and use of intimidation against political opponents. Vucic, however, denies all accusations and continues to lead a reshuffled administration. In response to the protests, SNS has organized counter-rallies in multiple cities to show support for the government.
The Road Ahead for Serbia
With public anger showing no signs of abating, Serbia faces a crucial moment in its political landscape. The protests highlight growing frustration with corruption, governance failures, and the need for transparent leadership. Analysts suggest that how Vucic addresses these grievances in the coming months could define the country’s political stability.
