Trump announces Venezuela oil blockade targeting sanctioned tankers, escalating US-Venezuela tensions and raising fears of military conflict.
The United States has sharply escalated pressure on Venezuela after former President Donald Trump announced a total blockade of sanctioned oil tankers entering or leaving the country.
In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump claimed the Venezuelan government, led by President Nicolás Maduro, is involved in terrorism, drug trafficking, and human smuggling. He said oil revenues are being used to fund criminal activities and accused Caracas of stealing American assets.
According to Trump, US naval forces have been significantly expanded in the Caribbean region, surrounding Venezuela with what he described as the largest military deployment ever seen in South America. He warned that the operation could grow even larger in the coming days.
The announcement follows a recent US seizure of an oil tanker near Venezuela’s coast. Washington said the ship was involved in illegal oil transport and would be taken to a US port. Venezuela strongly denied the claims, accusing the US of piracy and unlawful detention of the crew.
Venezuela holds some of the world’s largest oil reserves and has long been under US sanctions aimed at weakening Maduro’s government. Both Republican and Democratic administrations have used economic pressure to challenge his leadership.
However, the latest move has raised serious concerns in Washington. Some US lawmakers argue that a naval blockade could be interpreted as an act of war. A resolution is expected in Congress calling for limits on military action against Venezuela.
As tensions rise, global oil markets and regional stability remain at risk. Analysts warn that further escalation could impact energy supplies and increase conflict across the Caribbean region.
