Uganda Priest Arrest Military Holds Father Ssekabira

Uganda Priest Arrest

Uganda priest arrest sparks concern as Father Deusdedit Ssekabira is held by military ahead of elections amid human rights scrutiny.

Uganda Priest Arrested by Military

The Ugandan army has confirmed it is holding Father Deusdedit Ssekabira, a Catholic priest who went missing on 3 December. The military claims he was involved in “violent subversive activities” and is now in “lawful custody” pending court charges.

Church Responds to Disappearance

The Masaka Diocese had reported Father Ssekabira’s disappearance, alleging he was taken by men in army uniform. Bishop Serverus Jjumba described the incident as a “grievous wound” to the church, the Masaka Diocese, and the priest’s family. Efforts are ongoing to secure his safe return.

Opposition Leaders Criticize Detentions

Opposition leader Bobi Wine condemned the military’s actions, stating that armed forces should not detain civilians. He highlighted that several of his supporters have reportedly been abducted in recent weeks.

Context of Human Rights Concerns

Uganda faces growing scrutiny over enforced disappearances and prolonged detentions without trial, especially as elections approach. In past incidents, Kenyan activists and opposition figures, including Kizza Besigye, were reportedly detained by security agencies before resurfacing in court.

Election Tensions Rise

With the upcoming elections, the military’s actions against civilians, clergy, and political opponents have raised concerns among human rights groups, highlighting a tense political environment in Uganda.
