Russia China joint air patrol S Korea & Japan scramble jets

Russia China joint air patrol

South Korea and Japan deployed fighter aircraft on Tuesday after Russian and Chinese warplanes carried out a coordinated air patrol close to both countries’ air defence zones, heightening regional tensions.

Multiple Russian, Chinese Aircraft Enter Korean Air Defence Zone

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, a group of seven Russian and two Chinese military aircraft entered the Korea Air Defence Identification Zone (KADIZ) at around 10am local time.
While the zone is not sovereign airspace, foreign pilots are expected to identify themselves when entering it — something the Russian and Chinese crews reportedly did not do.

South Korea responded by scrambling its own fighter jets and taking what it described as “tactical precautionary measures” in case the situation escalated. The foreign aircraft remained in and around the KADIZ for roughly an hour before departing.

Japan Also Reacts to Joint Patrol

Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said Tokyo also launched fighter jets after detecting the joint air patrol operating near Japanese territory.
He reported that:

  • Two Russian Tu-95 “nuclear-capable” bombers moved from the Sea of Japan toward the Tsushima Strait.
  • They were joined by two Chinese aircraft capable of launching long-range missiles.
  • Additional Chinese J-16 fighters and a Russian A-50 early-warning aircraft also participated.

Koizumi warned that the repeated joint missions by Beijing and Moscow represent “an expansion and intensification” of their military activities around Japan, calling the development a serious national security concern.

Tensions Already High Around Okinawa

Japan’s response follows several recent incidents:

  • Over the weekend, Tokyo accused Chinese fighter jets of pointing fire-control radar at Japanese aircraft over international waters — a major provocation.
  • On Monday, Japan confirmed extensive operations involving China’s aircraft carrier Liaoning near Okinawa, including numerous fighter jet takeoffs and landings.

Japanese officials noted it was the first time they had observed Chinese carrier-based fighter operations in the waters between Okinawa’s main island and Minami-Daitojima.

China, Russia Defend the Exercise

China’s Ministry of National Defence said the air patrol was part of “annual cooperation plans” with Russia and marked the 10th joint strategic patrol over the East China Sea and western Pacific.

Russia’s Defence Ministry confirmed its participation, adding that foreign fighter jets monitored the mission at various points along the flight path. The joint exercise reportedly lasted about eight hours.

Growing Military Alignment Between Moscow and Beijing

Since 2019, China and Russia have conducted frequent flights near South Korean and Japanese airspace without giving prior notification. Both governments frame the missions as routine military cooperation.

Their partnership has strengthened significantly since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with both nations also maintaining close ties with North Korea — a key security concern for Seoul and Tokyo.

What This Means for Regional Security

The latest patrol underscores several important trends:

  • Stronger China–Russia military coordination in East Asia
  • Increased pressure on Japan and South Korea to maintain rapid response readiness
  • Growing concerns that miscalculations could trigger dangerous encounters
  • The strategic importance of Okinawa and surrounding waters, now a frequent location for military maneuvers

As geopolitical competition intensifies in the Indo-Pacific, such joint operations are expected to continue — and so are the quick-response deployments by South Korea and Japan.
