President-elect Donald Trump has officially chosen Republican Representative Elise Stefanik as his nominee for the role of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Announcing the nomination, Trump expressed his confidence in Stefanik’s abilities: “I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter.” This nomination marks another key role within Trump’s Cabinet, aligning with his “America First” priorities as he begins building a team for his new administration.

Stefanik, who represents New York and ranks as the fourth-highest Republican in the House, has been a prominent supporter of Trump and a significant fundraiser for the GOP. She has built a solid record of backing Trump’s positions in Congress. Her outspoken support during Trump’s first impeachment hearings in 2019 boosted her standing within the party and among Trump supporters, who saw her as a rising “Republican star.” In the aftermath of Trump’s 2020 defeat, she continued to support him by challenging the 2020 election results in the House, endorsing his assertions of election fraud.

Initially, Stefanik had a more complex relationship with Trump. Known as a moderate Republican during her early years in Congress, she sometimes distanced herself from Trump’s policies, including voting against his 2017 tax reform plan. Early in her career, she was praised by former House Speaker Paul Ryan for her independent stance and willingness to bridge political divides. Before joining Congress, she worked on Ryan’s team for Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign.

Over time, however, Stefanik shifted to a more pronounced pro-Trump stance, explaining that her alignment with Trump reflected the strong support he received from her constituents in upstate New York. She eventually became one of Trump’s key allies, even being considered as a possible vice-presidential pick during his recent campaign. Stefanik herself has expressed pride in being a “top surrogate” for Trump and has openly stated her willingness to take on a significant role in his administration.

In 2021, Stefanik replaced Liz Cheney as the GOP conference chair after Cheney criticized Trump’s stance on the 2020 election, signaling her support for Trump’s vision and values within the party. Besides her leadership role, Stefanik serves on several influential committees, including the Armed Services Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

In recent years, she has also taken strong stances on issues such as antisemitism, even calling for action against college administrators who she felt had not adequately addressed the issue on campuses. This advocacy has gained her further attention, aligning with her assertive, hands-on style in politics.

Trump also made it clear that former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, who had recently run against him in the Republican primary before eventually endorsing him, would not be returning to the position. With Stefanik’s nomination, Trump seems set on establishing a Cabinet of loyal allies with aligned agendas.

Stefanik’s nomination will now go to the Senate for confirmation.
