Cambodia plans to nominate former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in helping to de-escalate recent border clashes with Thailand, the government in Phnom Penh announced on Friday (August 1).

Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol confirmed the move in a phone message, saying simply, “Yes,” when asked about the nomination plan, according to Reuters.

The White House also praised Trump’s efforts, describing his intervention as “fruitful” in easing military tensions. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote on X, “This peace was only possible because of Trump. Give him the Nobel Peace Prize!”

Chanthol, who also serves as Cambodia’s chief trade negotiator, said, “We recognize his great efforts for peace.” He added that through negotiations with the Trump administration, Cambodia was able to reduce U.S. tariffs on garment and footwear exports from 49 percent to 19 percent — a major boost for the country’s economy.

This is not the first such endorsement. In June, Pakistan recommended Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for mediating tensions with India. Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also announced that he had proposed Trump’s name for the honor.

Speaking earlier in Phnom Penh, Chanthol praised Trump’s role in peace efforts, saying he was deserving of the nomination.

The latest border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia were the most intense in over a decade, leaving at least 43 people dead and displacing more than 300,000 from border areas. Trump personally called leaders from both countries to urge restraint, and a ceasefire agreement was eventually reached on Monday with Malaysia’s mediation.
