A surfboard lost off Tasmania drifts 2,400 km to New Zealand, reuniting with its owner after 18 months. Discover the incredible journey and story.
A custom-made surfboard that fell off a boat in Tasmania nearly 18 months ago has miraculously drifted about 2,400 km (1,490 miles) to New Zealand’s west coast.
French kitesurfer Alvaro Bon discovered the barnacle-covered board in Raglan Harbour on New Zealand’s North Island while kitesurfing. After posting photos online, a friend of the board’s owner, Liam, recognized it and connected the two.
The Journey of a Unique Board
The surfboard, blown overboard in May 2024, was deemed irreplaceable since the designer no longer produces these models. Despite being covered in mussels and barnacles, it remained in remarkably good condition.
On the day of discovery, strong currents forced Bon to release his kite. Taking refuge on a remote part of the harbour, he noticed the cream-colored 7ft 6in (229cm) board. He hid it in the sand dunes, then returned later to kitesurf it back to the main harbour.
Social Media Leads to Reunion
After cleaning the board, Bon shared images highlighting the designer’s unique signature on surfing groups. The post quickly went viral, with hundreds commenting and sharing. Liam confirmed ownership and arranged for a family friend to collect the surfboard from Auckland.
A Philosophical Moment
Reflecting on the experience, Bon said, “Every story has meaning. The day I found the surfboard, I lost my kite. Maybe sometimes you need to let go of some things to find something better.”
This extraordinary tale highlights the power of ocean currents, social media, and human connection in reuniting lost items with their owners.
