The 2026 FIFA World Cup is approaching rapidly, and the tournament picture is becoming clearer as more nations secure their coveted spots. With 42 teams already qualified for the expanded 48-team edition, anticipation is growing across the football world.
Held across the United States, Canada and Mexico, this will be the biggest and longest World Cup ever staged, offering more matches, more venues and more global representation than any previous edition.
Current Status of Qualification
Europe’s traditional football giants — including France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Portugal — all booked their places in the latest international window. The qualifiers also produced remarkable stories, most notably Curacao becoming the smallest country by population ever to qualify for the men’s World Cup after a decisive 0-0 draw away to Jamaica.
Joining Curacao from the CONCACAF region are Haiti and Panama, both sealing their places after strong final-round performances. Scotland also returned to the global stage for the first time since 1998 following a dramatic 4-2 victory against Denmark.
The remaining six World Cup berths will be determined through intercontinental and UEFA playoff matches scheduled for early 2026.
When and Where Will the 2026 FIFA World Cup Take Place?
The tournament will be co-hosted by:
- United States
- Canada
- Mexico
The opening match will be held on June 11, 2026, at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, and the final is set for July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
With the expansion from 32 to 48 teams, the event will run for 39 days, making it the longest World Cup ever played.
When Will All Qualified Teams Be Confirmed?
The complete lineup of 48 nations will be finalized on March 31, 2026, following:
- FIFA’s intercontinental playoffs
- UEFA’s playoff rounds
Most confederations will have completed qualification by early 2025, but Europe and the intercontinental route will finalize the list last.
How Do the FIFA Intercontinental Playoffs Work?
Six teams — one from each confederation that has not yet secured qualification — compete in a mini-tournament for the final two spots at the World Cup. The matches will be held in Mexico in March 2026.
Participating teams:
- Jamaica, Suriname (CONCACAF)
- Iraq (AFC)
- DR Congo (CAF)
- Bolivia (CONMEBOL)
- New Caledonia (OFC)
When and Where Is the 2026 World Cup Draw?
- Date: December 5, 2025
- Venue: Kennedy Center, Washington, DC
The event was confirmed by US President Donald Trump alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. While Trump has hinted at participating in the ceremony, FIFA has not confirmed who will conduct the draw.
Tournament Format for the 2026 World Cup
The expanded format will feature:
- 12 groups of 4 teams each
- Top two teams + eight best third-place teams advance
- A 32-team knockout stage, introducing an additional elimination round compared to previous tournaments.
The modernized structure aims to create more competitive fixtures while ensuring fairness across groups.
