Egyptian football superstar Mohamed Salah has reportedly become a prime target for Saudi Pro League clubs, raising questions about his future at Liverpool amid recent tensions with the club.
Saudi Arabia Eyes Salah for Winter Transfer Window
Sources from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) revealed that the kingdom is closely monitoring Salah’s situation at Liverpool. The PIF, which holds significant stakes in top Saudi clubs including Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, Al-Ahli, and Al-Ittihad, is prepared to make a move for the Egyptian forward during the upcoming January transfer window.
“There could be a deal either as a loan or a permanent transfer,” said the PIF insider, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “While no direct talks with Liverpool have started yet, discussions will happen at the right time.”
Competition Among Saudi Clubs
Salah’s potential move is attracting attention across the Saudi Pro League. In addition to PIF-affiliated clubs, Aramco-backed Al-Qadsiah has also expressed interest in acquiring the Egyptian star. If the transfer materializes, Salah would join an increasingly star-studded league that already includes Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, Darwin Nunez at Al-Hilal, and N’Golo Kante at Al-Ittihad.
“The league is keen on attracting Salah because of his global profile,” the source added. “His arrival would make a massive impact both on and off the pitch.”
Tensions at Liverpool
Salah, 33, has publicly expressed frustration over his treatment at Liverpool following recent matches. After being left out of the squad against Leeds in a 3-3 draw, he revealed feeling “thrown under the bus” by Liverpool’s management and hinted at strained relations with manager Arne Slot.
He was subsequently excluded from Liverpool’s squad for their Champions League clash against Inter Milan, fueling speculation about a mid-season departure.
Salah’s Liverpool Legacy
Despite current struggles, Salah remains a Liverpool icon. He played a pivotal role in the club’s recent successes, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph. In the 2024-25 season, Salah recorded an impressive 29 goals and 18 assists. However, this season, Liverpool has struggled in the league, currently sitting 10th, with Salah scoring just four goals in 13 appearances.
Future Prospects
With the Africa Cup of Nations approaching, Salah may leave Liverpool after the upcoming Premier League clash against Brighton. A move to Saudi Arabia could not only offer Salah a fresh challenge but also help the Saudi Pro League continue attracting world-class talent and increase its global visibility.
