Ronaldo red card leads to clash between Ireland and Portugal coaches after Portugal’s 2-0 defeat, raising concerns over 2026 World Cup suspension.
Cristiano Ronaldo could face a suspension for Portugal’s opening match at the 2026 World Cup qualifiers after receiving a red card against Ireland, a first in his illustrious international career.
Ronaldo’s First Red Card in 226 International Appearances
During Portugal’s 2-0 defeat in Dublin on November 13, 2025, Ronaldo, 40, was shown a red card following an incident with Ireland defender Dara O’Shea. The striker, visibly frustrated with the scoreline, appeared to elbow O’Shea in the back while being closely marked in the penalty area.
This marks Ronaldo’s first sending off in 226 appearances for the national team—a historic moment in his international career. FIFA rules dictate that serious foul play like this could result in a ban of at least two matches. At minimum, Ronaldo will miss Portugal’s next game.
Ireland Coach Responds to Ronaldo’s Claims
After the match, Ronaldo suggested that Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson had attempted to influence the referee against him. Hallgrimsson, however, dismissed these comments, stating that Ronaldo’s red card was solely the result of his own actions on the pitch.
“He complimented me by saying I put pressure on the referee, but that had nothing to do with me. It was a moment of silliness for him,” Hallgrimsson told reporters. “Unless I somehow got into his head, the red card was entirely his own doing.”
Portugal Manager Calls Decision ‘Harsh’
Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez expressed disappointment over the red card, arguing that the incident appeared worse on camera than it actually was.
“He cares about the team. He spent almost 60 minutes being grabbed and pushed in the box. The action seems worse than it really was. I don’t see it as an intentional elbow but a full-body movement,” Martinez explained.
Martinez also criticized Hallgrimsson’s previous comments about Ronaldo “influencing the referee” during their last encounter in Lisbon, which Portugal won 1-0.
“The only thing that leaves a bitter taste is when the Irish coach suggested referees were being influenced, and then a defender dramatically falls at Ronaldo’s turn,” Martinez said.
Group F Standings and Upcoming Fixtures
Portugal remains two points ahead of Hungary at the top of Group F, thanks to a superior goal difference, and is guaranteed at least a playoff spot. Ireland is just one point behind Hungary.
Portugal will host Armenia in their final group game, while Ireland travel to face Hungary. The outcome of these matches will be crucial for both teams as they push toward qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
