Qatar Secures Spot in FIFA World Cup 2026

Qatar earned a spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating the United Arab Emirates (UAE) 2–1 in a thrilling qualifier on Tuesday. This is Qatar’s first time qualifying through matches, after entering the 2022 World Cup automatically as hosts.

Historic Win for the Asian Champions

Qatar dominated the second half with two brilliant headers. In the 47th minute, Boualem Khoukhi scored from Akram Afif’s pinpoint free-kick. Seventeen minutes later, Pedro Miguel doubled the lead with another header from Afif’s perfect cross.

Even after Tarek Salman received a red card in the 87th minute, Qatar held firm. Sultan Adil scored for the UAE during added time, but Qatar’s defense stayed strong to secure the win at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.

Qatar Tops Group A and Looks Ahead

The victory placed Qatar at the top of Group A in Asian qualifiers. The UAE dropped to second place and will head to the playoff round, while Oman finished third and exited the race.

Coach Carlos Queiroz praised the team’s discipline and teamwork, noting that Qatar’s success reflects their growing strength in Asian football.

Meanwhile, Japan and South Korea — both already qualified — continued to impress in international friendlies. Japan stunned Brazil with a 3–2 comeback win in Tokyo, while South Korea maintained its unbeaten run against South American opponents.
