FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Quarterback Marcel Reed delivered a stellar all-around performance, throwing for 280 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another score, as No. 4 Texas A&M held off a determined Arkansas Razorbacks team 45-42 on Saturday to remain unbeaten in the 2025 college football season.

The Aggies (7-0, 4-0 SEC) continued their best start since 1994 and stand as the only undefeated team in the SEC following Georgia’s 43-35 victory over Ole Miss earlier in the day.

Reed Leads Aggies’ High-Powered Attack

Reed put on a show, completing 23 of 32 passes with pinpoint accuracy and avoiding turnovers after a four-game streak with interceptions. The sophomore signal-caller added 55 rushing yards and showcased improved decision-making and pocket presence.

“He played his most complete game yet,” head coach Mike Elko said postgame. “We’re learning how to make the plays that win football games.”

Texas A&M scored on seven of its nine full drives and amassed 497 total yards, continuing its dominance over Arkansas with its 13th win in the last 14 meetings.

Late Drive Seals the Win

After Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green cut the Aggies’ lead to 38-35 in the fourth quarter, Texas A&M responded with a clutch 12-play drive. Running back EJ Smith converted a critical 4th-and-1, and Reed connected with Ashton Bethel-Roman for a 37-yard strike to set up Reuben Owens II, who punched in a 12-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 45-35.

Arkansas fought back, scoring with 10 seconds left, but the Aggies recovered the onside kick to lock up the win.

Bethel-Roman’s Homecoming Performance

Receiver Ashton Bethel-Roman, once an Arkansas signee, made the most of his return to Fayetteville with 83 receiving yards and a touchdown.

“It felt good to play here again,” Bethel-Roman said. “I know a lot of those guys on the other side, so it was special to compete against them.”

He praised Reed’s leadership, adding, “He was sharp today — fewer missed throws, great composure.”

Defensive Concerns for the Aggies

While Texas A&M’s offense impressed, the defense struggled to contain Arkansas’ ground game, giving up 8.4 yards per carry and 268 rushing yards overall.

Elko admitted his defense has work to do:

“We mis-fit a lot of runs. Anytime you see their backs bursting through open lanes, that’s a problem we have to fix. The quarterback run game made it even tougher.”

Despite the lapses, Texas A&M’s resilience late in the fourth quarter showed why they remain a top contender in the SEC.

Arkansas Shows Fight Under Bobby Petrino

In their first home game since naming Bobby Petrino interim head coach, the Razorbacks (2-5, 0-3 SEC) displayed renewed energy and competitiveness.

Quarterback Taylen Green threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns while adding 89 rushing yards and two more scores. Running back Mike Washington contributed 147 yards on the ground, marking his best performance of the year.

Though it was Arkansas’ fifth straight loss, Petrino’s squad showed grit that could carry over into next week’s early kickoff.

Aggies Eye Top-Three Ranking

With No. 2 Miami’s loss to Louisville, Texas A&M could rise into the top three in the AP Poll for the first time since 1995. The Aggies’ balanced offense and steady leadership from Elko have them poised for a playoff push — if they can tighten up defensively.

The Takeaway

Texas A&M: Reed’s breakout game and a strong offensive showing kept the Aggies’ playoff hopes alive, but defensive improvements are crucial moving forward.
Arkansas: Despite another loss, the Razorbacks played with heart and confidence under Petrino — a positive sign for the remainder of the season.
