Marc Marquez has officially returned to the top of the MotoGP world. The 32-year-old Spaniard clinched his seventh MotoGP world championship — and his first since 2019 — at the Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi on September 28, 2025. By finishing second behind his Ducati Lenovo teammate Francesco Bagnaia, Marquez sealed the title with five rounds still remaining in the season.
The victory marks the end of a six-year drought filled with injuries, surgeries, and setbacks, making this championship one of the most emotional of his career.
How Marquez Clinched the 2025 Title
Heading into the race, Marquez needed to outscore his younger brother and title contender Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing) by at least three points. With Alex finishing sixth and Marc taking second, the championship gap widened to an unassailable 201 points, confirming him as the 2025 MotoGP world champion.
Alex was also the first to congratulate Marc after the race, with the two brothers sharing an emotional embrace on track.
Emotional Scenes at Motegi
As he crossed the finish line, Marquez was visibly overcome with emotion. After six years, four surgeries, and over 100 crashes, the Spaniard finally reclaimed the crown he last wore in 2019. A special tribute video played on the big screens at Motegi, reminding fans of his journey back to glory.
“It’s impossible to explain this feeling,” Marquez admitted. “I made mistakes coming back too early from surgery, but I kept fighting. Now, I can finally be at peace with myself.”
The championship celebration was completed when Marquez’s name was added to the MotoGP Tower of Champions trophy, cementing his place in history once again.
Bagnaia’s Strong Ride, But Spotlight on Marquez
Francesco Bagnaia, the 2022 and 2023 MotoGP champion, controlled the race from start to finish, despite late-race smoke concerns from his Ducati. He crossed the line first, followed by Marquez and Honda’s Joan Mir, who claimed a rare podium this season.
Despite taking the win, Bagnaia acknowledged that the day belonged to his teammate:
A Champion’s Journey After Injury
This seventh MotoGP crown is perhaps Marquez’s most special. Since his 2019 triumph, he faced years of surgeries, failed comebacks, and doubts about whether he would ever return to the top. Many in the paddock believed his best years were behind him, but 2025 proved otherwise.
By switching to Ducati, Marquez reinvented himself, combining his trademark aggressive riding style with a more calculated approach. His dominance throughout the 2025 season, with multiple victories and sprint race doubles, showed that the “King of MotoGP” was back.
What This Means for MotoGP
Marquez’s comeback and championship win are more than just personal milestones — they represent a significant shift in the MotoGP landscape. His rivalry with younger talents like Pedro Acosta and the continued strength of Ducati promise thrilling battles in the future.
With seven MotoGP titles now under his belt, Marquez equals legends and further strengthens his case as one of the greatest riders in motorcycle racing history.
