DETROIT — When Barry Sanders shows up, Jahmyr Gibbs shows out — and Monday night was no exception. The Detroit Lions reclaimed dominance in the NFC with a 24-9 statement win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, powered by Gibbs’ career night and a relentless defensive display.
The dynamic running back exploded for 218 total yards and two touchdowns, reminding everyone why he’s one of the NFL’s most exciting young stars. Detroit’s all-black uniforms matched the mood — all business — as they bounced back strong from last week’s loss in Kansas City.
Gibbs Steals the Show with Record-Breaking Speed
Jahmyr Gibbs delivered one of the best performances of his career, highlighted by a 78-yard touchdown burst that left fans and defenders in awe. According to Next Gen Stats, Gibbs hit a top speed of 22.2 mph, the fastest by any player on a rushing touchdown this season.
He’s also the only player in the past three seasons to reach 22 mph on two separate touchdowns, the previous one being a 70-yard run in 2024 against the Titans.
“Every time Barry [Sanders] is here, I want to put on a show,” Gibbs said — and he certainly did
Detroit’s Defense Overcomes Injuries to Shine
Despite missing key defensive starters — safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch, and corner Terrion Arnold — the Lions’ secondary played lights-out football. They forced two first-half turnovers and limited Tampa Bay’s high-powered offense to just 58 yards in the first half and 251 total yards.
Amik Robertson forced a fumble recovered by Aidan Hutchinson, while Arthur Maulet ripped the ball away from tight end Cade Otton for a crucial interception.
Detroit also sacked Baker Mayfield four times, continuing their streak of defensive dominance at home.
Third-Down Struggles a Lingering Concern
The Lions’ lone area of weakness? Third-down efficiency. Detroit converted only 3 of 13 attempts, a stat coach Dan Campbell wasn’t pleased with. Despite that, the team’s energy and execution in key moments ensured the win never felt in doubt.
Detroit is now 13-4 following a loss since 2022 — second-best in the NFL behind only Kansas City — showing their resilience and ability to respond under pressure
Bucs Fall from NFC’s Top Spot After Tough Night
For Tampa Bay, this was a night to forget. The return of Mike Evans and rookie Emeka Egbuka was supposed to boost their offense, but injuries and inefficiency derailed the plan.
Evans suffered a concussion and broken collarbone in the second quarter after colliding with Rock Ya-Sin, forcing him out of the game early. Without their star receiver, the Bucs’ offense sputtered.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 28 of 50 passes for 228 yards with one touchdown and one interception — a stat line that doesn’t fully show his struggles. Mayfield looked out of sync most of the night, though he did connect with rookie Tez Johnson for a 22-yard score.
Tampa’s Defense Exposed by Gibbs’ Versatility
The Bucs came into the game boasting the NFL’s fifth-best run defense, allowing just 3.7 yards per carry. But Detroit flipped that script, racking up 164 rushing yards and averaging 5.1 yards per carry.
Gibbs consistently torched Tampa’s defense in the flat and open field. On the opening drive alone, he picked up chunk plays of 30, 24, and 28 yards, setting the tone for the game.
Tampa’s defensive front made several costly decisions, including dropping both interior linemen Greg Gaines and Elijah Roberts into coverage during Gibbs’ 78-yard dash — a call that left the middle wide open.
