Lazio Ultras arrest: Two brothers charged with Mafia-style extortion while trying to secure contracts for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina. Venice prosecutors have detained two men linked to Italian football hooliganism in a corruption case tied to the upcoming Winter Games.
Authorities in Venice have arrested two brothers from Rome, affiliated with Lazio’s notorious “Irriducibili” ultras group, for allegedly attempting to manipulate public contracts related to the 2026 Winter Olympics. The northern Italian resort of Cortina, cohosting the Games with Milan from February 6-22, has been at the center of the investigation.
Mafia-Style Tactics in Cortina
According to prosecutors, the men tried to exploit their criminal influence, including control over drug trafficking and local nightlife, to profit from Olympic construction and service contracts. Their methods, described as “Mafia-style,” included intimidation and physical violence against rivals.
Reported incidents include a nightlife organizer being dragged into the woods and threatened at gunpoint, a debtor locked in a car boot, and assaults on unlicensed drug dealers operating in the region.
Connection to the Irriducibili Ultras
The brothers claimed ties to the late Lazio Ultras leader Fabrizio Piscitelli, who was shot in Rome in 2019. The term “Irriducibili” translates roughly to “diehards” and represents one of Italy’s most infamous football fan groups. Prosecutors say the brothers used this reputation to coerce local officials and competitors.
Political and Olympic Contract Pressure
In 2022, the suspects attempted to leverage political influence by offering electoral support to a Cortina city official. When the offer was refused, they reportedly sent threatening messages demanding Olympic-related contracts.
Currently, one brother is held in pre-trial detention, while the other remains under house arrest. Five additional suspects face charges of extortion using Mafia-style tactics but were not arrested at this stage.
Implications for the 2026 Winter Olympics
This high-profile arrest highlights the ongoing challenge of safeguarding major international events from organized crime and corruption. Authorities are intensifying scrutiny in the lead-up to the Olympics to ensure fair and transparent distribution of public contracts.
