F1 US Grand Prix Verstappen Cuts Piastri Title Lead

F1 US Grand Prix

F1 US Grand Prix: Max Verstappen dominates in Austin to cut Oscar Piastri’s Formula 1 title lead to 40 points, keeping his championship hopes alive. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen delivered a flawless drive at the Circuit of the Americas, leading from start to finish to claim victory at the 2025 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. The four-time world champion cut a major chunk out of Oscar Piastri’s championship lead, reigniting hopes of a late-season title charge.

Verstappen Delivers Perfect Weekend in Austin

Starting from pole position, Verstappen controlled every lap under the Texas sun, showcasing trademark precision and consistency. His dominant win on Sunday, coupled with victory in Saturday’s Sprint, gave him maximum points from the weekend — his third win in the last four races.

“I’m enjoying this battle,” said Verstappen after securing his 68th career win. “The title fight is still alive. We’ll keep pushing hard until the very last race.”

With five races remaining, Verstappen has reduced Piastri’s lead to 40 points, down from 104 just two months ago.

Piastri Endures a Tough Weekend

Championship leader Oscar Piastri had a weekend to forget. The McLaren driver crashed out of the Sprint race and finished fifth in Sunday’s main event. Despite the setback, the Australian remained confident about his title chances.

“I’d still rather be leading than chasing,” said Piastri, who aims to become Australia’s first F1 world champion since Alan Jones in 1980.

Norris Battles to Second, Leclerc Holds Firm

McLaren’s Lando Norris recovered from an early struggle against Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, reclaiming second place after an intense mid-race battle. The Brit finished 7.9 seconds behind Verstappen, with Leclerc taking third after a strong defensive display on soft tyres.

“It was a tough race — we gave everything,” Norris said. “Charles made me work for it, but we can be proud of our pace.”

Team principal Andrea Stella later suggested Norris might have challenged Verstappen for the win had he not been held up by Leclerc during the opening stages.

Hamilton, Russell Keep Mercedes in the Mix

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell continued Mercedes’ steady form, finishing fourth and sixth respectively. Piastri slotted in between them, missing out on fourth place by just over a second.

Further down the grid, Yuki Tsunoda impressed with a seventh-place finish for Red Bull’s sister team, followed by Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber), Oliver Bearman (Haas), and Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), who completed the points.

Early Drama and Penalties

The race saw early drama when Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli and Williams driver Carlos Sainz collided on lap seven, prompting a brief virtual safety car. Sainz retired from the race and was later handed a five-place grid penalty for next weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix.

Texas Heat, High Stakes

Despite the weekend being declared a heat hazard, track conditions were manageable, with air temperatures peaking around 28.6°C (83.5°F). Verstappen’s calm and controlled performance under pressure was a reminder of why he remains one of the most complete drivers in modern Formula One.

With five races left, the title fight between Piastri, Norris, and Verstappen promises an electrifying conclusion to the 2025 F1 season.
