Damon Jones faces charges after allegedly sharing LeBron James’ injury details to profit from illegal sports betting, FBI confirms. Former NBA guard Damon Jones has been arrested in connection with a federal investigation into an illegal sports betting operation that allegedly involved sharing confidential injury information about LeBron James.
Insider Info Sparks Betting Scandal
According to multiple reports, Jones — who played 11 seasons in the NBA — was accused of leaking private medical information about a “prominent player” to aid illegal gambling. A source close to James confirmed that the Los Angeles Lakers star was the player in question.
Authorities stressed that LeBron James is not accused of any wrongdoing.
The FBI announced that Jones was one of 34 people arrested in a multistate probe that also led to charges against Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier. The operation reportedly spanned nearly a dozen states and involved tens of millions of dollars in illicit wagers.
Text Messages Reveal Betting Tip
Investigators allege that before the Lakers’ matchup with the Milwaukee Bucks on February 9, 2023, Jones texted a co-conspirator, advising them to “get a big bet on Milwaukee tonight” because James would be out with an ankle issue.
James, fresh off breaking Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record, went on to miss three consecutive games due to left ankle soreness. The Bucks defeated the Lakers 115–106, validating the tip.
One of Jones’ alleged text messages read:
“Bet enough so Djones can eat too now!!!”
The indictment also accuses Jones of sharing additional nonpublic information before a January 15, 2024 game between the Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Connection to LeBron James and Lakers
Jones, who previously served as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers, maintained a long-standing friendship with James. He was later invited by then-Lakers coach Darvin Ham to participate informally in team activities during the 2022–23 season.
However, current Lakers coach JJ Redick clarified that Jones has had no involvement with the team under his leadership. When asked about the issue, Redick emphasized the league’s renewed focus on gambling policies:
“We’ve had two meetings on it already,” Redick said. “It’s something every player is aware of now, especially after recent incidents.”
A Widening Sports Betting Investigation
The case involving Jones is part of a broader FBI investigation into illegal sports wagering and rigged poker games linked to organized crime. Officials say the network extended across multiple states and involved players, coaches, and outside gamblers.
While the NBA has not commented directly on Jones’ arrest, league insiders suggest that stricter compliance measures are likely to follow, especially concerning player injury reports and gambling disclosures.
Impact on the League
The scandal highlights a growing concern within professional sports: the intersection of insider information and legal sports betting. As wagering becomes more widespread, the league faces new challenges in maintaining transparency and trust among fans.
Jones’ arrest serves as a stark warning to anyone tempted to exploit privileged access for financial gain.
