Cape Verde Secures Landmark World Cup Spot
Cape Verde has made history by qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Eswatini 3-0 in their final group match. The island nation, located off the West African coast, finished top of Group D ahead of football giants like Cameroon. This marks Cape Verde’s first-ever appearance at a World Cup.
Dramatic Victory in Praia
The match, held at the Estadio Nacional de Cabo Verde in Praia, saw Cape Verde overcome early nerves to dominate the second half. Goals from Dailon Livramento, Willy Semedo, and veteran Stopira sealed the win and sent the nation into a frenzy. Livramento opened the scoring three minutes after halftime, followed by Semedo six minutes later. Stopira, 37, capped the game with a stoppage-time goal as a tribute to his long-standing career since 2008.
A Fairytale Campaign
Only 25 years ago, Cape Verde rarely featured in international football. Today, the 600,000-strong island nation celebrates joining the ranks of Africa’s World Cup representatives, including Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, and Ghana. Cape Verde finished Group D with 23 points, four ahead of Cameroon, whose eight previous World Cup appearances are the most for an African country.
Nationwide Celebration
The island gave citizens a day off to cheer for their team. While the first half was cautious and tense, the goals sparked nationwide jubilation. Cape Verde becomes the second-smallest country to reach the World Cup finals, after Iceland’s participation in 2018.
Cameroon Eyes Playoffs
Despite finishing second, Cameroon is likely to advance to the playoffs for the four best runners-up across the nine African qualifying groups. Their goalless draw against Angola in Yaounde drew criticism from home fans, while Angola’s 39-year-old goalkeeper Hugo Marques impressed with key saves.
Cape Verde’s historic qualification not only inspires small nations worldwide but also showcases the growing talent emerging from African football’s smaller nations.
