Former NFL standout Antonio Brown has been arrested on attempted murder charges connected to a May shooting incident following a celebrity boxing match in Miami, Florida. Authorities confirmed on Thursday that the 37-year-old was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals while in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and later flown to Essex County, New Jersey, where he remains in custody pending extradition to Miami.

According to Miami police spokesperson Mike Vega, it remains unclear why Brown was brought to New Jersey first or how long he had been in Dubai, although the ex-NFL star had frequently shared social media posts from there in recent months.

Details of the Miami Shooting Incident

The arrest warrant, linked to the May 16 altercation, alleges that Antonio Brown grabbed a handgun from a member of the event’s security staff and fired two shots at Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, a man he had earlier fought with during the event. Nantambu reportedly told investigators that one of the bullets grazed his neck, but he survived the encounter.

Video footage from the event shows Brown in a physical fight with multiple individuals, followed by the sound of gunshots. Police initially detained him that night but released him after questioning.

Antonio Brown’s Response and Legal Developments

In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account the following day, Brown claimed he was attacked and acted in self-defense, writing:

“I was jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me. Contrary to some videos circulating, police detained me temporarily, heard my side, and released me. I went home that night and was not arrested.”

Authorities issued an arrest warrant on June 11 for second-degree attempted murder, a felony charge that carries up to 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted. It’s currently unclear when Brown will be extradited back to Florida to face formal charges

A Career Overshadowed by Controversy

Antonio Brown’s football career was once among the most celebrated in the NFL. Over 12 seasons, he earned multiple All-Pro honors and recorded 928 receptions, over 12,000 receiving yards, and 83 touchdowns. Brown spent most of his prime years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, before later playing for the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

However, Brown’s career was marred by off-field incidents, including battery charges, domestic violence allegations, and failure to pay child support. His erratic behavior reached a breaking point in 2021, when he infamously removed his jersey and ran off the field mid-game against the New York Jets, marking the end of his NFL tenure.

What’s Next for Antonio Brown?

As the legal process unfolds, questions remain about Brown’s mental health, accountability, and whether he’ll face the full weight of the law. Despite multiple second chances throughout his career, this latest charge could represent the final downfall of a once-great athlete whose name became synonymous with both talent and turmoil.

Brown’s legal team has not yet issued an official statement, and the timeline for his return to Miami for court proceedings remains uncertain.
