Zelenskyy London talks with UK, France, and Germany leaders to secure European support for Ukraine amid US-led peace plan and ongoing Russia conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in London this week to meet key European leaders as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s position in the Russia-Ukraine war and assess a revised US-led peace plan. The discussions come amid growing tensions over territorial concessions and European security guarantees.
Zelenskyy Seeks Support from UK, France, and Germany
During his London visit, Zelenskyy met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The goal of these talks is to unify European allies on Ukraine’s defence strategy, financial support, and negotiating stance regarding the US-proposed peace plan.
Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of unity between Europe, Ukraine, and the US, noting that a divided approach could weaken Ukraine’s leverage in negotiations with Russia.
European Leaders Push for Convergence
President Macron highlighted that the key to progress in the peace process is achieving “convergence” between European and US positions on Ukraine’s security and territorial issues. According to Macron, once common ground is established, the parties can move into a new phase aimed at ensuring Ukraine’s stability and European security.
Chancellor Merz, meanwhile, expressed skepticism over parts of the US peace plan, signaling that European leaders are carefully reviewing the proposal before endorsing it.
US Pressure and Russian Response
US President Donald Trump’s administration has actively pushed for a peace deal, sending special envoys to Moscow and Florida for negotiations. However, Zelenskyy faces growing pressure to accept a plan that critics say heavily favors Russian demands.
The Kremlin has emphasized the importance of being informed about the results of US-Ukraine discussions, underlining Russia’s insistence on retaining control over territories it occupies, including parts of eastern Ukraine and Crimea.
Security Guarantees and NATO Membership
A major sticking point in the talks remains Ukraine’s future security guarantees. Russia has repeatedly stated that any European involvement in Ukraine’s defence, including NATO membership or peacekeeping forces, is a red line.
Ukraine, on the other hand, seeks strong security assurances from Europe and the US to prevent future aggression, while also resisting Russian demands to cede additional territory or abandon NATO ambitions.
Germany Appeals to China
Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul used the opportunity to appeal to China to influence Russia to engage seriously in peace talks. While Beijing has maintained a neutral stance, Western officials have criticized China for providing economic and technological support that strengthens Russia’s military capabilities.
Financial and Military Support from Europe
Zelenskyy is also exploring options for financing Ukraine’s wartime needs, including continued European contributions to military aid. European countries, despite footing much of the financial burden, have limited leverage because most of the military equipment and intelligence comes from the US.
Seven EU countries—including Estonia, Finland, and Poland—have urged the EU to consider using frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine’s recovery and defence, though legal complexities remain.
The Situation on the Ground
Despite the diplomatic efforts, the war continues to affect civilians. Recent Russian attacks in Kharkiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions have caused multiple casualties, while both sides report ongoing drone and artillery strikes. The conflict underscores the urgency for a viable and sustainable peace agreement.
What’s Next
As Zelenskyy continues his diplomatic tour, including an upcoming visit to Brussels, he aims to solidify European support, assess NATO’s willingness to fund Ukrainian defence, and evaluate Ukraine’s strategic options in the evolving conflict.
The world watches closely as European leaders and the US seek a path to end the war in Ukraine, balancing pressure on Russia with guarantees for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
