Tragedy at Lakshmipur Madrasa: Family Alleges Murder

Lakshmipur, May 13, 2025 — Police recovered the body of 7-year-old Sanim Hossain from Al-Mu’in Islami Academy in Uttar Temuhuni. His family claims that his teacher beat him to death.

Conflicting Accounts Raise Concerns

Sanim’s relatives said madrasa staff tried to cover up the incident. They told the family he had hanged himself in the toilet. But when they arrived, they found his body on a bed in a different room.

Police confirmed injury marks on Sanim’s neck and other parts of his body. His classmates said the teacher beat him earlier that day.

Investigation Underway

Police have detained the teacher, Mahmudur Rahman. They sent the body to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.

Additional Superintendent of Police Rezaul Haque said Sanim had been abused physically and emotionally. Officers are preparing a case, and further action will follow after the autopsy results.

Journalists Among 37 Sued in Chattogram Attempted Murder Case

Chattogram, May 13, 2025 — A pro-BNP lawyer has filed a case against 37 individuals, including 26 journalists, accusing them of attempted murder.

Details of the Complaint

Lawyer Rezaul Islam filed the case with the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakar Siddique. The court ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation to look into the matter.

Rezaul claimed supporters of the ruling party attacked him on May 1 near Jamiatul Falah Mosque. He said the group hurled crude bombs, beat him, and stole Tk 30,000.

The accused include prominent journalists and media workers from various outlets. The case also lists 70–80 unidentified individuals and 11 “Awami terrorists.”

CUJ Responds with Concern

The Chattogram Union of Journalists (CUJ) condemned the lawsuit. They said the case was politically motivated. According to their statement, Rezaul had earlier threatened to disrupt a picnic planned by journalists on May 1.

CUJ leaders said a group attacked journalists that day, injuring several. They demanded a fair investigation and protection for journalists.

Conclusion

These events reveal the complexity of Bangladesh’s current climate. Prof Yunus’s visit offers a hopeful note focused on unity and reform. In contrast, the madrasa tragedy and the legal action against journalists expose deep-rooted issues in justice and media freedom.
