Ensuring a Transparent Bangladesh Election 2026
Dr. Yunus said the caretaker government has implemented steps to ensure credible elections. Voters will be able to cast ballots safely, confidently, and without interference.
Ambassador van Bommel welcomed these measures and reaffirmed the Netherlands’ support for Bangladesh’s democratic process. He noted that an EU pre-election monitoring team will arrive this week, with Dutch participation to ensure transparency.
Bangladesh–Netherlands Cooperation in Trade and Climate
The meeting also discussed bilateral trade, agriculture, and climate resilience. Dr. Yunus praised Dutch expertise in flood control and coastal protection, noting its impact in Bangladesh. He suggested that both nations could expand cooperation in renewable energy and sustainable farming.
Rohingya Crisis and Global Support Appeal
Dr. Yunus highlighted the Rohingya refugee crisis in Cox’s Bazar, where over one million people live in vulnerable conditions. He warned that funding shortages threaten ongoing humanitarian operations and called for increased Dutch and global assistance.
He also mentioned a high-level international conference on September 30, 2025, during the UN General Assembly in New York. The summit aims to mobilize funding and international focus on the Rohingya crisis.
Ambassador van Bommel acknowledged the urgency but pointed out that global attention is divided due to other geopolitical conflicts.
Shared Vision for Bangladesh’s Growth
The Dutch envoy expressed interest in Bangladesh’s microfinance and social business models, pioneered by Dr. Yunus. Both sides agreed to strengthen collaboration in democracy, trade, climate adaptation, and humanitarian support.
