US Defense Chief Confirms Mission
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made it clear that the recent deployment of US Marines in the Caribbean is “not training”. During a visit to the USS Iwo Jima in Puerto Rico, he emphasized that the operation is a real-world mission aimed at defending US national interests and combating drug trafficking.
He explained, “What you’re doing is not training; this is a real-world exercise to protect the United States and stop the flow of drugs into our country.”
Puerto Rico’s Strategic Role
Meanwhile, Governor Jenniffer Gonzalez welcomed Hegseth’s visit and highlighted Puerto Rico’s strategic importance in regional security. She noted that the island plays a key role in fighting drug cartels linked to Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro.
Consequently, the US increasingly relies on Puerto Rico as a forward-operating base for rapid responses across the Caribbean.
Escalating Tensions with Venezuela
Tensions between the US and Venezuela escalated after a naval strike sank a Venezuelan vessel, killing 11 people. Washington claimed the boat carried illegal drugs, but human rights groups condemned the strike as an extrajudicial killing.
Furthermore, some US lawmakers questioned the strike’s legality. Senator Rand Paul criticized it as a “glorification of killing without trial”, while Representative Adam Smith argued the vessel did not pose a direct military threat. In response, Venezuelan officials denied any drug trafficking activities.
US Military Buildup in the Region
In addition, the US deployed 10 F-35 stealth jets to Puerto Rico. Officials, including Senator Marco Rubio, stated that they would target drug cartels wherever they operate against US interests.
President Trump also warned that any Venezuelan aircraft approaching US ships could face military action, thereby increasing regional tensions.
Mixed Reactions from Latin America
Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar expressed support for the US actions, highlighting the harm caused by drug traffickers. Conversely, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva voiced concern over the US military presence, calling it a source of tension in the region.
Overall, the US Caribbean deployment underscores growing geopolitical friction and the risk of further confrontations with Venezuela.
