US & Ukraine to Hold Peace Talks in Saudi Arabia Next Week

The US and Ukraine are set to hold discussions in Saudi Arabia next week, focusing on a potential peace framework to bring an end to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. This development comes shortly after Washington suspended military aid and intelligence-sharing with Kyiv following a tense meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.
High-Level Talks in Saudi Arabia
Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, confirmed plans for a meeting with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia, with Riyadh or Jeddah as the likely host cities. Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Witkoff emphasized the goal of establishing a framework for a ceasefire and eventual peace agreement.
“We are working on coordinating this meeting with Ukraine in Saudi Arabia. The location is still being finalized, but it will definitely be held there,” Witkoff stated. “The primary objective is to outline a peace framework and initiate a ceasefire.”
Zelenskyy also announced that he would be traveling to Saudi Arabia on Monday, accompanied by a team of officials. He noted that discussions with US representatives would take place following a scheduled meeting with the Saudi Crown Prince.
“Ukraine is committed to achieving peace, and I will personally meet with the Crown Prince before my team engages with our American partners,” Zelenskyy said in an address on Thursday.
This will mark the first significant engagement between US and Ukrainian officials since the controversial February 28 meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy, which reportedly ended in heated exchanges, resulting in the Ukrainian leader’s premature departure from the White House. The fallout led to Trump cutting intelligence-sharing and halting military aid to Ukraine.
Shifting Diplomatic Dynamics
Despite the previous tensions, Trump signaled a shift in tone earlier this week, stating that he had received a letter from Zelenskyy expressing willingness to engage in negotiations.
“Ukraine is eager to reach a deal, as they don’t have much of a choice,” Trump told reporters on Thursday. “Russia, too, is in a position where they must come to the table—though for reasons that only I fully understand.”
Witkoff acknowledged Zelenskyy’s recent conciliatory gestures, noting that the Ukrainian leader had been expressing regret over the White House confrontation and showing appreciation for US support. However, he remained uncertain about the fate of a proposed economic agreement between the US and Ukraine, which has been under discussion.
Economic Agreement and Strategic Interests
The proposed economic pact between Washington and Kyiv has been viewed as a strategic move by Ukraine to maintain strong ties with the US administration. Analysts suggest that securing American backing remains crucial for Kyiv, especially as Washington explores new diplomatic channels with Moscow.
US officials have highlighted the potential benefits of the economic agreement, which would grant the US access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals. These resources are vital for industries such as aerospace, electric vehicles, and medical manufacturing. The agreement is also seen as a means of strengthening US-Ukraine relations while serving as a deterrent against future Russian aggression.
“We’ll have to see if Ukraine follows through on the deal,” Witkoff remarked, hinting at some skepticism regarding its finalization.
As the world watches these evolving negotiations, the upcoming discussions in Saudi Arabia could play a critical role in shaping the future of the Russia-Ukraine war and the broader geopolitical landscape.
