Meeting to Focus on Phase Two of Gaza Ceasefire

Prime Minister Netanyahu has indicated that the main agenda for the White House meeting will be the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire, which involves complex discussions about governance and security in the enclave. During a recent briefing, an Israeli government spokesperson, Shosh Bedrosian, stated:

“The prime minister will meet with President Trump on December 29; they will discuss future steps, phases, and the international stabilization force related to the ceasefire plan.”

Phase one of the ceasefire, which began in October, primarily involved the exchange of Israeli captives and Palestinian detainees and Israel’s withdrawal from some parts of Gaza. Phase two, however, is expected to be far more challenging, focusing on post-conflict governance, demilitarization, and long-term stability in the region.

Trump Urges Israel to Engage with Syria

The upcoming meeting also comes as President Trump encourages Israel to seek dialogue with Syria. Following repeated airstrikes and border tensions, Trump has called for a “strong and true dialogue” with the government of President Ahmed al-Sharaa to pave the way for a regional security agreement.

Israel has remained a close US ally, receiving both diplomatic support and substantial military aid, while facing ongoing criticism over actions in Gaza. Since the ceasefire, reports suggest over 360 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza despite relative calm, highlighting the sensitive nature of the discussions ahead.
