United States President Donald Trump has hinted that he is willing to cooperate with New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, but warned that the incoming leader must remain “respectful” of Washington if he wants to govern successfully.

Trump made the comments during an interview on Fox News, shortly after Mamdani announced his transition team following his landmark victory as the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of New York City.

Reacting to Mamdani’s victory speech — in which the progressive mayor-elect pledged to “stand up to Trump” — the president said the remarks were “a dangerous statement.”

“He has to be a little bit respectful of Washington, because if he’s not, he doesn’t have a chance of succeeding,” Trump warned.

The president quickly clarified that while he wants New York City to succeed, his support for Mamdani personally will depend on the new mayor’s attitude toward federal leadership.

“I want to make the city succeed. We’ll help him a little bit, maybe,” Trump said, speaking at the American Business Forum in Miami, Florida.

Trump doubles down on criticism but signals cooperation

Despite calling Mamdani a “communist” and “Marxist” during his campaign rallies, Trump appeared to soften his stance after the election. He said his administration would be willing to “help” the new mayor and support New York’s success.

“We’ll help him. We want New York to be successful. Let’s see how a communist does in New York,” Trump said sarcastically, drawing laughter from the audience.

Mamdani defiant: “I will not mince my words on Trump”

For his part, Mamdani has rejected Trump’s labels, describing himself as a democratic socialist rather than a communist. His policy platform includes free universal childcare, fare-free public buses, and government-run grocery stores — ideas aimed at reducing inequality in one of America’s most expensive cities.

In his post-election remarks, Mamdani signaled he would continue to challenge Trump’s policies, but he also kept the door open for dialogue with the administration.

“I will not mince my words when it comes to President Trump,” Mamdani said. “I will describe his actions honestly while always keeping the door open to conversation.”

A new political chapter for New York — and the nation

Mamdani’s victory marks a major shift in New York City politics, symbolizing a new wave of progressive leadership at a time when the Democratic Party is struggling to unite its centrist and leftist factions.

His win could serve as a model for how progressives can mobilize diverse urban voters and challenge Trump’s influence nationwide. Political analysts suggest that cooperation between Trump and Mamdani — however uneasy — could shape the city’s future and test America’s broader political balance.

As Mamdani prepares to take office on January 1, 2026, all eyes are on how this unlikely dynamic between the White House and City Hall will unfold.
