Ukraine’s Parliament Backs Zelenskyy’s Legitimacy
Ukraine’s parliament has reaffirmed the legitimacy of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s continued leadership, emphasizing the constitutionality of postponing the presidential election due to the ongoing war with Russia.
During a session on Tuesday, all 268 lawmakers present voted in favor of the resolution supporting Zelenskyy’s mandate. Meanwhile, 12 members were absent from the session. The resolution, designed as a symbolic endorsement, comes as Zelenskyy’s official presidential term ended in May.
Trump Criticism and Ukraine’s Legal Standpoint
Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently labeled Zelenskyy a “dictator” for not conducting elections, echoing previous statements made by Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, under Ukrainian law, elections are legally suspended during martial law, which was declared following Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
The Ukrainian parliament, known as the Verkhovna Rada, reiterated that Zelenskyy was democratically elected in a free and transparent election. The resolution emphasized that his mandate remains valid until a new president is elected and sworn into office, as per Article 108 of the Ukrainian Constitution.
Zelenskyy’s Approval Ratings Disputed
Trump also claimed that Zelenskyy had a mere 4% approval rating, citing reports from Russian media. However, a recent survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology indicated that Zelenskyy maintains a 57% approval rating. Although this is a decline from the peak of 90% at the beginning of the war, analysts see it as a sign of continued legitimacy and public trust in his leadership.
Parliament Overcomes Initial Voting Setback Trump
A day prior to Tuesday’s unanimous approval, the resolution had failed to pass, garnering only 218 votes—eight votes short of the required 226. Zelenskyy’s ability to secure shifting majorities in parliament remains crucial for passing key legislation, as some members of his party are not always present for voting.
This parliamentary support is essential for ratifying international agreements, including a potential peace deal with Russia and a proposed rare earth minerals agreement with the United States.
Rare Earths Agreement with the US
In addition to internal political debates, Ukraine is reportedly working on finalizing a significant rare earth minerals agreement with the U.S. Rare earth materials are essential for modern technologies, including military equipment, renewable energy, and electronics.
If successfully signed, the agreement could strengthen Ukraine’s economy and its strategic partnership with the U.S. amid ongoing geopolitical challenges. This deal would also reduce Western reliance on China for these crucial resources, marking a major shift in global supply chains.
As Ukraine navigates political and economic challenges, maintaining both domestic unity and international alliances will be vital in shaping the country’s future.
