Thailand Cambodia border clash New Offensive Sparks Crisis

Thailand Cambodia border clash

Thailand Cambodia border clash escalates as Thai forces launch a new offensive, Cambodia closes crossings, and thousands are displaced amid rising violence.

Thailand has escalated tensions with Cambodia by launching a new military operation along their shared border, while Cambodia has responded by closing all crossings. The conflict, rooted in a decades-long border dispute dating back to colonial times, has displaced hundreds of thousands of people and left multiple casualties on both sides.

Thai Forces Claim Reclamation of Border Territory

The Royal Thai Navy confirmed that its forces launched operations early Sunday morning in Trat province, aiming to reclaim areas they consider sovereign Thai territory. Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaiyapan stated that the offensive was conducted “under principles of self-defense and in accordance with international law.”

According to Thai authorities, military units successfully regained control over the targeted areas, raising the Thai national flag as a symbol of their victory. The operation reportedly included coordinated efforts by Thailand’s army, navy, and air force.

Ongoing Clashes Across the Border

Reports indicate that fighting is not limited to Trat. Clashes have been reported in multiple provinces, including Surin and Pursat, with both sides allegedly using artillery, drones, and fighter jets. In Pursat province, Thai F-16 jets reportedly dropped bombs in Thma Da commune, while artillery shells targeted Boeung Trakoun village in Banteay Meanchey province.

Although exact casualty numbers from the latest clashes are unclear, previous confrontations have left at least 25 soldiers and civilians dead, and displaced more than 500,000 people in both Thailand and Cambodia.

Cambodia Shuts Down Border Crossings

In response to the escalating conflict, Cambodia announced the immediate closure of all border crossings with Thailand. The Ministry of Interior described the move as necessary to protect citizens amid rising hostilities.

The shutdown highlights the worsening relations between the neighboring countries, despite international efforts to negotiate peace.

International Mediation Efforts Face Setbacks

The renewed fighting comes despite mediation attempts, including those by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who had claimed both nations agreed to a new ceasefire. Thai officials quickly clarified that no agreement to halt the offensive was reached, with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul vowing that operations would continue until Cambodia returns to a peaceful resolution path.

Trump has promoted his role in brokering previous ceasefires, including a five-day truce in July, which ended under the threat of U.S. trade sanctions. However, the recent flare-ups, triggered by a skirmish on December 7 that wounded two Thai soldiers, have undermined these agreements.

Curfews and Displacement

Amid the escalation, Thailand imposed a curfew in Trat province, aiming to manage civilian safety. Thousands of villagers have already fled their homes, seeking refuge in evacuation centers in provinces like Si Sa Ket.

The ongoing conflict continues to strain diplomatic relations and raise concerns for regional stability. Experts warn that unless both sides return to meaningful dialogue, the humanitarian and security crisis along the Thailand-Cambodia border could deepen.
