Heavy rainfall across the Pacific Northwest in the US and western Canada has triggered dangerous floods, forcing thousands of people to leave their homes. Rising water levels in major rivers such as the Skagit and Snohomish have pushed communities into emergency mode as authorities warn that conditions may worsen.

Historic River Levels and Widespread Emergency Alerts

Washington’s governor, Bob Ferguson, issued a statewide emergency after officials estimated up to 100,000 residents could face evacuation. Forecasts indicate river levels may reach historic highs, especially along the Skagit River, which is expected to crest soon.

Despite no confirmed deaths, authorities stressed that rescue teams are still working in risky conditions as more rain and snowfall in mountain regions continue to worsen the flooding.

Road Closures, Power Risks, and Major Disruptions

More than 30 highways across Washington are closed due to flooding, debris, and safety hazards. Cities around Seattle experienced heavy disruptions as roadways, farmlands, and low-lying neighborhoods became submerged under fast-moving water.

In Skagit County, officials issued immediate evacuation orders for around 75,000 people living on the floodplain. Deep and powerful floodwaters are creating extremely hazardous conditions, especially near Cape Horn, Hamilton, and Thunderbird.

Rescue Efforts Underway Across the Region

Emergency teams using inflatable boats and helicopters have already rescued multiple families trapped inside their homes. In Snohomish County, aerial teams helped residents escape rising water after the Snohomish River reached near-record levels.

Heartbreaking stories continue to emerge, including young families losing homes they moved into only months earlier. Many communities are now bracing for additional rainfall and the possibility of further evacuations.

Impact Spreads Into Canada

Across British Columbia, Canada, evacuation orders and flood warnings are in effect. Several major highways leading to Vancouver remain shut due to flooding and the threat of avalanches. Officials expect the Nooksack River to overflow but hope the damage will not match the devastating 2021 floods.

The US–Canada border at Sumas is currently closed to commercial traffic, adding further disruption to the region.
