Qatar Idaho Air Force base to host F-15 jets and pilots, boosting US-Qatar defense cooperation, joint training, and regional security. The United States has officially approved Qatar’s plan to establish an Air Force facility at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, a major step toward strengthening defense cooperation between the two nations. The facility will host Qatari F-15QA fighter jets and pilots training alongside US Air Force personnel.
A New Chapter in US-Qatar Defense Partnership
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made the announcement following a meeting with Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, at the Pentagon.
Why Mountain Home AFB Was Chosen
Located in Idaho’s high desert, Mountain Home Air Force Base offers vast airspace, ideal weather, and advanced infrastructure for fighter jet operations. The base already houses the 366th Fighter Wing, making it a strategic location for international pilot training programs.
According to US officials, the Qatari Air Force facility will include hangars, operational offices, and living quarters for roughly 300 Qatari and American personnel.
Deal Rooted in Long-Term Cooperation
A 2022 environmental report from the Air Force had already evaluated the potential impact of hosting a Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) F-15QA squadron at Mountain Home.
The facility will operate under a 10-year timeline, beginning in Fiscal Year 2024, with options to extend further based on joint operational needs.
Political Reactions and Controversy
While the Pentagon emphasized that the base will remain under full US ownership, some political commentators criticized the deal. Trump ally Laura Loomer labeled the agreement “outrageous” and “a betrayal,” arguing it gives foreign powers a foothold on American soil.
However, defense officials clarified that foreign military training programs like this one are not new. Similar partnerships exist with countries such as Germany, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia, all of which contribute financially through foreign military sales to build or upgrade US-based training facilities.
Strengthening Regional Stability and Security
Secretary Hegseth also praised Qatar’s diplomatic efforts in mediating recent Israel-Hamas ceasefire talks and its support for US operations against Iranian nuclear sites earlier this year.
Qatar already hosts the largest US military base in the Middle East — Al-Udeid Air Base, which serves as a central hub for US operations in the region.
Local Economic and Strategic Impact
Beyond defense cooperation, the project is expected to create new construction and engineering jobs in Idaho. The Air Force will hire local contractors to build the new infrastructure, providing an economic boost to the surrounding communities.
The facility will also bring new technological collaboration, as both nations explore joint advancements in aerospace, logistics, and pilot training systems.
A Strategic Move for the Future
Analysts view the decision as part of a broader US effort to reinforce alliances in the Middle East while ensuring interoperability with key partners amid rising tensions with Iran and renewed instability in the region.
As global security dynamics evolve, the Idaho-based training hub could serve as a model for future international military partnerships, balancing American leadership with trusted allied cooperation.
