Palestinian prison deaths surge amid Gaza war, highlighting abuse, neglect, and calls for international investigation into Israeli detention practices
The number of Palestinian deaths in Israeli detention facilities has dramatically increased amid the ongoing Gaza war, according to a recent report by Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI). The report highlights systemic abuses and negligence in Israeli prisons, raising serious human rights concerns.
At least 94 Palestinians have reportedly died in Israeli custody since October 2023, with the majority coming from Gaza, signaling an urgent need for international scrutiny.
Majority of Deaths From Gaza, Widespread Detention Reported
According to PHRI, 68 of the 94 deaths occurred among Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, while 26 deaths involved detainees from the West Bank or those holding Israeli citizenship. The deaths were recorded in various facilities: 52 in Israeli military prisons and 42 in prisons run by the Israel Prison Service (IPS).
Critics argue that thousands of Palestinians have been detained across Gaza and the occupied West Bank under conditions described as abusive and life-threatening.
Allegations of Torture, Neglect, and Enforced Disappearance
PHRI’s report paints a grim picture of detention in Israel:
- Physical abuse such as bruising, rib fractures, organ damage, and head injuries has been a leading cause of death.
- Chronic medical neglect and malnutrition have further exacerbated mortality rates.
- Many detainees are effectively disappeared, with families left in the dark about the fate of their loved ones.
The report also highlights that Israeli authorities blocked access to detainees for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), violating both domestic and international law.
High-Profile Cases Highlight Ongoing Concerns
PHRI cited the case of Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, who has been held by Israeli authorities since December. For days, officials claimed they had “no record” of his detention. His lawyer asserts he has been subjected to torture and humiliation, underscoring concerns about transparency and accountability.
Deaths have been reported in major IPS facilities such as Ktzi’ot, Megiddo, Nitzan, and Ofer, as well as military camps including Sde Teiman, which has long been criticized for harsh treatment of Palestinian detainees.
International Calls for Independent Investigation
PHRI has urged the international community to launch an independent investigation into the deaths of Palestinians in Israeli custody. The NGO warns that without such oversight, the combination of systematic abuse, medical neglect, and enforced disappearances could continue unchecked, further escalating humanitarian concerns during the Gaza conflict.
The report serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for accountability, transparency, and protection of human rights for Palestinian prisoners in Israel.
