Maduro Trump call confirmed amid rising US-Venezuela tensions, signaling potential dialogue while Venezuela emphasizes peace and sovereignty.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has confirmed a recent phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, describing it as “cordial” and expressing hope that it could mark the beginning of a more respectful dialogue between Washington and Caracas. The conversation comes amid escalating tensions, including a US military buildup in the Caribbean and a campaign against alleged drug trafficking.
Maduro Emphasizes Diplomatic Prudence
Speaking to state-run Venezolana de Televisión, Maduro explained that he chose to reveal details about his call with Trump after international media reports surfaced. He stressed the importance of handling sensitive matters quietly rather than engaging in public “microphone diplomacy.”
“During my years as foreign minister and now as president, I’ve learned that diplomacy requires patience and prudence,” Maduro said, referencing the late Hugo Chavez, who mentored him in foreign affairs.
He added that Venezuela welcomes the possibility of a peaceful dialogue, emphasizing that his country will always seek solutions that uphold sovereignty and dignity.
Trump’s Position and Military Actions
President Trump also addressed the call but gave few details about the discussion. At a White House news conference, he noted:
“I spoke to him briefly, just told him a couple of things, and we’ll see what happens with that.”
The Trump administration has significantly increased pressure on Venezuela, deploying the world’s largest aircraft carrier to the Caribbean, targeting alleged drug-smuggling vessels, and warning of potential strikes. Officials insist these measures are intended to combat drug trafficking, though Maduro and his supporters view the campaign as a pretext for seizing Venezuela’s oil resources.
Drug Trafficking and Strategic Concerns
While Venezuela contributes only a small portion of the world’s cocaine production, it serves as a key transit hub for drugs entering North America. Estimates suggest that approximately 10–13% of global cocaine production passed through Venezuela in 2020. Maduro has repeatedly criticized the US for exaggerating the threat of drug trafficking to justify military interventions.
Calls for Peace with Sovereignty
In a recent rally in Caracas, Maduro reaffirmed Venezuela’s commitment to peace but insisted it must come with sovereignty, equality, and freedom.
“We do not want a slave’s peace, nor the peace of colonies. Colony, never! Slaves, never!”
He expressed hope that his conversation with Trump could pave the way for more respectful engagement while ensuring that Venezuela’s independence and dignity remain intact.
Looking Ahead
The diplomatic situation between the US and Venezuela remains fragile. Analysts suggest that continued dialogue, however cautious, may prevent escalation into direct conflict. Both leaders appear to be testing the waters for negotiation, balancing domestic political considerations with international pressure.
