Lando Norris champion as McLaren Claims F1 2025 World Title

Lando Norris champion

Lando Norris champion after a dramatic Abu Dhabi finale, securing his first F1 world title for McLaren and ending Max Verstappen’s four-year dominance. Lando Norris finally achieved his long-awaited dream by winning his first Formula One World Drivers’ Championship at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The British driver sealed the title with a third-place finish, enough to edge out Max Verstappen by just two points in one of the closest season finales of the modern era.

The Yas Marina Circuit saw incredible tension as Norris crossed the line behind race winner Verstappen and teammate Oscar Piastri—yet his third place was all he needed to secure the crown and deliver McLaren its first drivers’ championship since 2008.

“You’re World Champion!” — An Emotional Moment

Moments after crossing the finish line, Norris received the message every driver dreams of:
“That’s it, mate. You are world champion!”

Overcome with emotion, the 26-year-old thanked his family, team, and fans.
He admitted, “I didn’t expect to cry, but this means everything. My parents have been with me since my first karting days.”

Verstappen Falls Just Short

Despite dominating the Abu Dhabi race, Verstappen’s effort wasn’t enough to secure a fifth consecutive title. He ended the season with 421 points, narrowly behind Norris’ 423. It marks the end of Verstappen’s four-year reign and signals a major shift in the competitive landscape of Formula One.

McLaren’s Golden Season

McLaren, led by team principal Andrea Stella and CEO Zak Brown, had already captured their second straight Constructors’ Championship earlier in the season. Norris’ drivers’ title now completes a remarkable year for the team.

Brown praised both drivers, saying the season was “exciting, challenging, and proof of how strong this team has become.”

With this victory, Norris becomes the first British champion since Lewis Hamilton in 2020 and adds his name to McLaren’s legendary list of world champions—following icons like Emerson Fittipaldi, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Mika Häkkinen, and Hamilton.

A Journey Nine Years in the Making

Norris reflected on how far he has come with McLaren since joining the team as a teenager.

“I’ve been with McLaren for nine years. We’ve had ups and downs, but today it all paid off. I wanted to fight until the very last lap, and I’m proud to bring this title home.”

His teammate Oscar Piastri, who led the championship earlier in the year, finished third overall after a highly competitive season.

A Historic Season Finale

The 2025 Abu Dhabi GP became the first championship-deciding race involving more than two drivers since the dramatic four-way title battle in 2010. Fans witnessed a showdown filled with strategy, pressure, and championship-level racing—a fitting end to one of the most unpredictable Formula One seasons in years.
