Kyiv Drone Attack Russia Strikes Capital Ahead of Trump Talks

Kyiv Drone Attack

Kyiv drone attack kills civilians and disrupts power ahead of Trump-Zelenskyy meeting, as Russia targets Ukraine’s capital with missiles and drones.

Kyiv, Ukraine – On December 27, 2025, Russian forces launched a major drone and missile assault on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, killing at least one civilian and injuring more than 20 others. The attacks come just a day before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida to discuss potential steps toward ending the ongoing war.

Heavy Strikes Shake the Capital

The coordinated assault began in the early hours of Saturday, with air raid alerts lasting nearly 10 hours across Kyiv. Local authorities reported that Russian forces launched around 500 drones and 40 missiles targeting both energy infrastructure and residential areas.

A 47-year-old woman was killed, and at least 22 people were wounded, including two children, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s City Military Administration. Municipal workers and firefighters were seen at the sites of damaged apartment buildings, responding to the destruction.

Widespread Power and Heating Outages

The attacks left a significant portion of Kyiv without heat and power, with freezing temperatures adding to the hardship. Kyiv’s mayor reported that about one-third of the city had no heating, while around 320,000 households in the surrounding Kyiv region were left without electricity.

Journalist Kristina Zelenyuk described the attacks as an attempt by Russia to cut Ukrainians off from critical resources, saying, “Their goal is to freeze us and intensify civilian suffering.”

Diplomatic Talks Amid Escalation

The strikes come ahead of a critical meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump, focused on security guarantees and territorial disputes in eastern Ukraine. Moscow continues to demand Ukrainian withdrawal from parts of the Donetsk region, while Kyiv insists on halting combat at current positions.

The U.S. has proposed a compromise, including the creation of a free economic zone if Ukraine cedes certain areas of Donetsk. Zelenskyy has indicated that he may seek a stronger stance for Ukraine and could put any U.S.-backed plan to a national referendum if needed.

Zelenskyy Condemns Russian Actions

Following the attacks, Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia’s leadership is using every opportunity to inflict “greater suffering” on Ukraine and apply international pressure. He stated that the missile and drone strikes speak louder than any negotiations, signaling Moscow’s unwillingness to end the conflict.

Before heading to the U.S., Zelenskyy planned phone calls with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and other European leaders. He also scheduled a stop in Canada to meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney as part of his diplomatic tour.

The Kyiv attacks highlight the persistent threat to civilians and infrastructure, even as international diplomacy seeks solutions to the nearly four-year-long conflict.
