Khaleda Zia health update as the former Bangladesh prime minister remains in critical condition in Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital, with supporters praying for her recovery.
Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been admitted to Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital in what doctors describe as a “very critical” condition. The 80-year-old BNP chairperson, long troubled by multiple health complications, continues to receive intensive treatment as supporters nationwide call for prayers.
Admitted With Severe Lung Infection
Zia was taken to the hospital on November 23 after showing symptoms of a serious lung infection. According to her personal physician, Dr A Z M Zahid Hossein, she remains in the ICU but has shown slight signs of responding to treatment.
“For the past three days, her condition has remained unchanged but stable. Medically, we see that she is responding,” he told local reporters, requesting continued prayers for her recovery.
BNP Leaders Warn of a Critical Situation
The Bangladesh National Party’s secretary-general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, earlier stated that her health had reached a “very critical” stage. Party leaders remain on standby as her medical team closely monitors her condition.
She is currently battling a range of chronic illnesses, including heart disease, liver and kidney problems, diabetes, arthritis, and long-term respiratory issues. She also lives with a permanent pacemaker and previously underwent heart stenting procedures.
Supporters Gather Outside Hospital in Prayer
Since the news broke, hundreds of BNP supporters and admirers have gathered outside Evercare Hospital, holding banners and praying for their leader. Many expressed deep emotional concern, hoping for her swift recovery and return to politics.
One supporter, Liton Molla, who rushed to the hospital upon hearing the updates, said:
“I just pray she recovers and can contest the election. Bangladesh needs a leader like Khaleda Zia.”
Air Ambulance on Standby for Treatment Abroad
BNP Vice Chairman Ahmed Azam Khan confirmed that an air ambulance has been prepared to transfer Zia abroad for advanced medical care—but only if her condition stabilizes enough for travel.
Her son, Tarique Rahman, currently living in London, publicly thanked the country for their prayers and urged people to continue supporting his mother during this critical time.
A Political Figure at the Heart of Bangladesh’s Transition
Khaleda Zia, who has served as prime minister three times, remains one of the most influential political figures in Bangladesh. Her imprisonment in 2018 on corruption charges—under Sheikh Hasina’s former government—prevented her from seeking treatment abroad for years. She was eventually released last year following the political upheaval that led to Hasina’s ouster.
Despite her fragile health, Zia has vowed to participate in the February 2026 general election, where the BNP is widely viewed as a leading contender.
Interim Government Emphasises Her Role in Democracy
Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, highlighted her significance in the nation’s political transition.
“During this period of rebuilding democracy, Khaleda Zia stands as a source of inspiration. Her recovery is crucial for the country,” he said.
A Nation Watches and Waits
As medical teams work around the clock and supporters continue to gather, Bangladesh watches closely—hoping one of its most prominent leaders pulls through.
Khaleda Zia’s future, both medically and politically, hangs in the balance, but the nationwide outpouring of support reflects the deep impact she continues to have on the country’s political landscape.
