Seven elephants killed in Assam after a high-speed train collision. Emergency measures taken; authorities plan better safety for wildlife crossings.
Seven wild Asian elephants, including young calves, were tragically killed when a high-speed train collided with a herd crossing railway tracks in Assam’s Hojai district early Saturday. Another calf was injured in the accident.
The Delhi-bound express train had dozens of elephants in sight, prompting the driver to use emergency brakes. Despite this, several elephants were struck, and five train carriages derailed. Fortunately, no passengers or staff were hurt. Train services were delayed, canceled, or diverted across the region.
Veterinarians later examined the deceased elephants before they were buried. Assam is home to nearly 6,000 elephants, one of the largest populations in India. Although elephants often cross local railway tracks, this incident occurred outside a designated elephant corridor.
Authorities are now reviewing safety measures to prevent such accidents in the future, including better signage and potential wildlife corridors to protect both animals and passengers.
