India Muslims Arrested Over ‘I Love Muhammad’ Slogans

India Muslims Arrested

Hundreds of Muslims in India face arrest over “I Love Muhammad” posts and banners, sparking nationwide protests amid criticism of rights violations.

Arrests Across India for ‘I Love Muhammad’ Expression

In recent weeks, authorities in India have detained hundreds of Muslims for publicly displaying “I Love Muhammad” on banners, t-shirts, and social media. Officials claim these expressions threaten public order.

How the Controversy Began in Kanpur

The incident started on September 4 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, during Eid al-Milad al-Nabi celebrations. A local neighborhood displayed a board saying “I Love Muhammad,” inspired by the iconic “I Love New York” design. Some residents complained, arguing it violated local laws restricting new additions to public religious events.

Police later charged two dozen people with promoting religious enmity, an offense that can carry up to five years in prison. The case sparked protests across states including Maharashtra, Telangana, Gujarat, and Jammu & Kashmir.

Bulldozers and Home Demolitions

In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, authorities demolished at least four homes of individuals involved in protests after clashes with police. Similar actions have occurred in other BJP-governed states. Activists note that these demolitions often happen without prior notice or court orders, despite Supreme Court guidelines.

Legal Perspective: Is It Illegal?

India’s Constitution guarantees freedom of religion (Article 25) and freedom of expression (Article 191), unless the speech incites violence. Experts argue that authorities are targeting alleged public disturbances rather than the act of expressing “I Love Muhammad” itself.

Nadeem Khan of APCR highlighted the double standard, noting that images of Hindu gods carrying weapons are widely accepted in public spaces.

Widening Pattern of Religious Targeting

Since 2014, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, incidents of hate speech and legal actions targeting Muslims have increased significantly. Analysts say that social media and political networks amplify local disputes into national controversies. BJP leaders even promoted “I Love Bulldozer” posters in Modi’s constituency, referencing the home demolitions, which many critics see as a display of selective enforcement.

Effect on Muslim Youth

Young Muslims, particularly those active on social media, feel increasingly marginalized. Analysts warn that the crackdown on peaceful expressions of faith may deepen alienation and social tension.

“Asserting faith has become risky, especially for youth,” says political commentator Asim Ali. “The growing hostility makes the future uncertain for many communities.”
