Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have received additional jail sentences over a state gift fraud case. This case revolves around a luxurious Bulgari jewellery set gifted by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during a 2021 state visit.
The court convicted them for breaking Pakistan’s rules on state gifts. Imran Khan received a 10-year sentence for criminal breach of trust and seven years for criminal misconduct, along with a fine exceeding 16 million Pakistani rupees (£42,600). Bushra Bibi was also sentenced alongside him. The new sentences will run concurrently with earlier convictions.
Khan, who has faced more than 100 legal cases ranging from corruption to selling state gifts, described the charges as politically motivated. His lawyer confirmed plans to challenge the verdict in the high court.
The Toshakhana 2 case alleges that Khan instructed a private firm to undervalue the gifted jewellery, allowing him to repurchase it at a significantly reduced price. Under Pakistani law, state gifts must be declared and managed by the Toshakhana department, but officials may buy them at their assessed value.
Despite his imprisonment since August 2023, Khan remains active on social media, posting messages critical of Pakistan’s government and military leadership. He has faced restrictions on family visits, with only limited access recently granted to his sister.
The judge noted Khan’s age as a factor in being lenient with the sentence. This case adds to the ongoing legal and political challenges faced by the former prime minister since his ousting in April 2022.
