George Santos prison release: Trump grants immediate pardon to the disgraced ex-lawmaker convicted of fraud and identity theft, sparking nationwide reactions.
US President Donald Trump has ordered the immediate release of former Congressman George Santos, who served a seven-year sentence for fraud and identity theft. On social media, Trump said Santos “has been horribly mistreated” and added, “Good luck George, have a great life!”
Santos, a Republican, became only the sixth member in US history expelled from Congress following a 2023 ethics report.
Santos’ Convictions and Crimes
George Santos stole the identities of 11 individuals, including family members, to fund his lifestyle. He served in a minimum-security prison in New Jersey. During sentencing in April, the judge remarked:
“You got elected with your words, most of which were lies.”
He cried in court and begged for a chance to rebuild his life. Although he could not change the past, Santos promised to shape his future responsibly.
Background of Santos’ Scandals
Investigations in 2022 revealed multiple false claims in Santos’ resume. For example, he lied about holding university degrees and working at Citigroup and Goldman Sachs. Additionally, he misused campaign funds, fabricated stories about family members, and engaged in questionable fundraising schemes.
As a result, authorities charged him with 23 federal felonies. In 2023, Congress expelled him—the first expulsion in over 20 years.
Trump’s Justification and Political Reactions
Trump defended his decision by comparing Santos’ case to Senator Richard Blumenthal, who had misrepresented his military service. He praised Santos for his “Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN.”
Blumenthal responded that the mistakes occurred more than a decade ago. Despite them, Connecticut voters re-elected him three times. Meanwhile, Santos’ attorney, Andrew Mancilla, praised Trump and called the original sentence excessive.
Santos’ Plea for Clemency
Earlier this week, Santos published an open letter to Trump, requesting fairness and the chance to reunite with family and his community. He explained that a death threat forced him into solitary confinement and expressed deep remorse for his past actions.
“No man, no matter his flaws, deserves to be lost in the system, forgotten and unseen, enduring punishment far beyond what justice requires,” Santos wrote.
This letter likely influenced Trump’s decision to grant immediate clemency.
Trump’s History of Pardons
Trump has issued pardons to other Republican politicians since returning to office. In May, he pardoned Michael Grimm, convicted of tax crimes, and former Connecticut Governor John Rowland, who faced corruption and fraud charges. These pardons, including Santos’, have sparked national debate about political clemency and justice.
