Gaza ceasefire civilian deaths leave 11 family members killed after Israeli tank strike in northern Gaza. Tensions rise despite ceasefire measures.
Gaza’s Hamas-run civil defense has reported a devastating incident in the northern Gaza Strip, where 11 members of the same family were killed after the bus they were traveling in was struck by an Israeli tank shell. The attack occurred in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City as the family attempted to return home to inspect the damage to their property.
This incident marks the deadliest single episode involving Israeli forces since the ceasefire came into effect eight days ago.
Israeli Military Response and Claims
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that its troops had fired on what they identified as a “suspicious vehicle” that crossed the so-called yellow line—a boundary that marks areas still under Israeli operational control in Gaza. The IDF claimed the vehicle was approaching troops in a manner perceived as an imminent threat, prompting them to open fire.
Despite these claims, Hamas condemned the attack, saying the family was targeted without justification. Limited internet access in Gaza has left many Palestinians unaware of the precise positions of Israeli troops, making navigation near the yellow line extremely risky.
Measures to Prevent Future Incidents
In response to the incident, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced plans to establish visual markers along the yellow line to help civilians avoid areas under military control.
Ceasefire Developments: Hostages and Prisoner Releases
The ceasefire deal, brokered by the United States, has included multiple humanitarian and security provisions. Recently, Hamas returned the body of Israeli hostage Eliyahu Margalit to the Red Cross, marking the tenth deceased hostage repatriation from Gaza. The remains of 18 more individuals are still pending return.
On the Palestinian side, Israel has handed over the bodies of 15 Palestinians to Gaza officials, bringing the total to 135. The return of hostages and deceased persons has been a point of tension, though the US has stressed that minor delays do not constitute a breach of the ceasefire.
Additionally, as part of the ceasefire agreement, Israel released 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,718 detainees from Gaza, while Hamas returned all 20 living hostages.
Humanitarian Concerns in Gaza
The conflict that began on October 7, 2023, has left a profound humanitarian toll. The Israeli military operation followed a deadly Hamas-led attack in southern Israel, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages. According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, more than 67,900 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the conflict began, figures considered reliable by the United Nations.
The ongoing ceasefire has provided a fragile calm, but incidents like the Zeitoun tragedy underscore the extreme vulnerability of civilians and the urgent need for clear communication and safety measures in contested areas.
