How the Clash Started
According to eyewitnesses, the incident began around 11:00 pm when a female CU student returned to her mess to find the entrance locked. Despite repeated requests from her classmates, the guard initially refused to open the gate. After eventually unlocking it, the guard allegedly hurled abusive comments at the student and physically assaulted her.
The matter quickly spread among students, prompting hundreds to rush to the area. Tensions escalated further as local residents gathered in support of the guard, resulting in a violent confrontation.
Chittagong University clash Over 100 Students Injured
Dr. Md Tipu Sultan, senior medical officer at the university medical centre, confirmed that more than 100 students were treated for injuries. At least 20 students in critical condition were shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Two members of CU’s proctorial body also sustained injuries.
“I have never seen so many students injured in one night. Several were critically hurt and needed hospitalisation,” Dr. Sultan told reporters.
Attack by Locals with Weapons
Witnesses said locals, some armed with iron rods and homemade weapons, joined the clash. They reportedly roamed from dormitory to dormitory, threatening students and escalating the violence.
Police forces reached the spot but initially failed to control the situation. The confrontation continued until around 3:30 am, when army personnel intervened and restored order.
Student’s Statement on the Assault
The assaulted student described her ordeal, saying:
“Our mess gate closes at midnight. I returned before then, but the guard kept it locked and insulted me. When I tried to enter, he shoved and slapped me. Later, I was kicked as well.”
Her statement further fueled anger among students, who demanded strict action against those involved.
Army Assures Security
Major Shahriar, who led the army team on the ground, said:
“Our priority is to ensure the safety of students. We are coordinating with the university administration, and action will be taken swiftly against those responsible.”
University Authorities Respond
CU Proctor Prof. Dr. Tanvir Haider described the incident as “deeply unfortunate” and promised stern measures against the culprits. Vice-Provost Prof. Dr. Kamal Uddin confirmed that all departmental examinations scheduled for today have been postponed due to the situation.
Aftermath and Campus Situation
The Chittagong University campus remains tense but under control following the army’s intervention. Students are demanding justice for the assaulted female student and accountability for the violent attack that left dozens hospitalized.
University authorities have assured that a formal investigation will be launched, while student bodies continue to call for immediate punishment of those involved in the assault and subsequent clash.
