Arriving at the scene, Fuentes said she was there to ensure the man’s safety and fair treatment. However, the alderwoman was reportedly restrained by agents during the confrontation and later released.
“Our rapid responders were on-site after ICE sightings across the Northwest Side,” Fuentes said. “What federal agents are doing in Chicago is an act of violence against our community — and we must respond peacefully but firmly.”

The situation intensified in Humboldt Park, where multiple ICE operations were reported. Witnesses captured cell phone footage showing tear gas being deployed near Rico Fresh Market on West Armitage Avenue. Shoppers and bystanders scrambled for safety as rapid response teams intervened to calm the chaos.
Local activists accused ICE of using excessive force, while federal authorities defended their actions, saying protesters were obstructing law enforcement.
ICE and Homeland Security Respond
In an official statement, Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin confirmed the enforcement operation, explaining that tear gas and pepper balls were deployed after officers were blocked by demonstrators.
She emphasized that one undocumented individual attempted to flee before being injured and taken to a hospital for medical evaluation. “Our officers face increasing violence, including vehicles used as weapons and sniper threats. We will not stop protecting the American people,” McLaughlin said.
Community Vows to Stand Strong
Local leaders and community members have pledged to continue protecting immigrants and ensuring fair treatment under Chicago’s sanctuary city policies.
Ald. Fuentes stated that the city will not tolerate “federal intimidation” and will stand with vulnerable residents against aggressive immigration enforcement.
