Born in 1922 in Anhui province, China, Chen Yang Nobel laureate grew up on the Tsinghua University campus, where his father taught mathematics. As a teenager, he told his parents, “One day, I want to win the Nobel Prize.” He earned a science degree from National Southwest Associated University in 1942 and completed a master’s at Tsinghua University. After World War II, he studied in the US under Enrico Fermi at the University of Chicago.
