Brown University shooting suspect Claudio Valente was found dead after a multi-state manhunt. Police say the case may be linked to another killing.
Police say the suspect in the Brown University shooting has been found dead in a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire, ending a six-day multi-state search.
Authorities identified the suspect as Claudio Neves Valente, 48, a Portuguese national who briefly studied at Brown University more than two decades ago. Investigators believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Two firearms and other evidence linked to the attack were recovered near the scene.
The shooting occurred on 13 December inside Brown University’s engineering building during final exams. Two students lost their lives, and nine others were injured, several of whom remain hospitalized. The victims were later identified as Ella Cook, 19, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18.
Law enforcement officials also believe the suspect was responsible for the killing of an MIT professor in Massachusetts two days after the campus attack. CCTV footage and witness statements helped connect both cases through the same vehicle.
According to investigators, Valente used advanced methods to avoid being tracked, including a disguised mobile phone. The FBI deployed hundreds of agents to support local police during the investigation.
Brown University officials confirmed that Valente had no current affiliation with the institution. While the suspect is deceased, authorities say the investigation remains active as they work to determine the motive behind the attacks.
