Bolton Indictment: Former Trump Adviser Faces 18 Charges

Bolton Indictment

John Bolton surrenders to federal authorities, facing 18 charges over sharing and retaining classified information during his time as Trump’s adviser.

John Bolton, Donald Trump’s former national security adviser, surrendered to federal authorities in Maryland. He faces 18 charges for allegedly mishandling classified information, including top-secret documents.

Bolton’s White House Tenure and Exit

Bolton served in Trump’s first administration but left amid disputes. Since then, he has criticized Trump publicly on foreign policy and national security. The indictment makes him the third Trump political opponent charged recently.

Allegations: Sharing Sensitive Information

Prosecutors claim Bolton used personal email and messaging apps to share sensitive information. The documents reportedly included intelligence about potential attacks, foreign adversaries, and U.S. foreign policy.

Bolton insists he acted lawfully and accused the Justice Department of targeting Trump critics.

Court Appearance and Booking

Bolton arrived at the Greenbelt federal courthouse in Maryland without answering reporters’ questions. He will make an initial appearance before a judge. He may also visit the U.S. Marshals office for fingerprinting and a booking photo.

Bolton’s Defense: Diaries and Unclassified Records

Attorney Abbe Lowell said the records were diary-like entries shared only with family and previously known to the FBI. “Many public officials keep diaries — that is not a crime,” Lowell said.

The indictment also mentions a hacking attempt on Bolton’s accounts between 2019 and 2021, likely linked to Iran, which exposed some classified materials.

Previous Scrutiny: Memoir Publication

Bolton faced investigation in 2020 when he tried to publish The Room Where It Happened, his memoir of the Trump administration. The Justice Department initially blocked the book over possible classified content.

A federal judge allowed publication but warned Bolton he had “gambled with U.S. national security.” Investigations continued under Biden but did not result in charges until now.

Political Tensions with Trump

Trump criticized Bolton over the book release and revoked his security detail earlier this year. The indictment follows similar charges against other Trump critics, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
