He also sent a direct message to US President Donald Trump, emphasizing that while Brazil is open to negotiation on trade and mutual cooperation, its democracy and sovereignty are not up for discussion.

US-Brazil Tensions Over Tariffs

Lula’s op-ed also addressed the 50% tariffs imposed by the US on Brazilian products, including coffee and beef, following Bolsonaro’s conviction. He described the sanctions as politically driven, pointing out that the US has maintained a trade surplus with Brazil of $410 billion over the past 15 years.

Economists warn that these tariffs may affect Brazilian employment and exports, although Brazil’s strong trade ties with countries like China could cushion the economic impact. US consumers have already felt some effects, with rising prices for coffee and other Brazilian goods.

Comparing Bolsonaro and Trump

Lula drew parallels between Bolsonaro’s actions in Brazil and the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack. Both events involved attempts to undermine election results through force and intimidation. Meanwhile, Trump and his allies have framed Bolsonaro’s trial as a “witch-hunt,” drawing comparisons to their own legal battles following the Capitol riots.

Despite US criticism, Lula stressed the importance of maintaining long-term cooperation between Brazil and the United States, particularly in areas of shared interest, while standing firm on democratic principles.

Bolsonaro Supporters Rally Outside Hospital

During his medical visit, Bolsonaro’s supporters gathered outside the hospital, waving Brazilian flags and chanting for amnesty. Many of them voiced hopes that Bolsonaro might receive leniency through congressional support, though legal experts suggest immediate relief is unlikely.
