Alexander Isak injury update: Liverpool striker to miss two months after a reckless tackle by Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven. Latest recovery and team impact.
Liverpool striker Alexander Isak will be sidelined for at least two months following a serious ankle injury sustained against Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds confirmed that the Swedish forward underwent surgery for a fibula fracture after a “reckless” challenge by Spurs defender Micky van de Ven.
Manager Arne Slot described the injury as a significant setback, both for Isak personally and for Liverpool’s attacking options.
The Incident: How It Happened
The injury occurred during Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham when Isak was in the act of scoring the opening goal. Van de Ven’s tackle left the 26-year-old limping off the pitch, raising immediate concerns about the severity of the injury.
Slot was critical of the tackle, stating:
“If you make that tackle 10 times, 10 times there’s a serious chance of a player getting seriously injured.”
This contrasts with another challenge earlier in the match involving Xavi Simons, which Slot described as unintentional and unlikely to cause long-term harm.
A Challenging Start to Isak’s Liverpool Career
Isak’s first months at Anfield have been far from smooth. After signing from Newcastle for a British record fee of £125 million ($168 million) in September, a preseason dispute with his former club meant he arrived out of shape.
His season has also been hampered by a groin injury, and in 16 appearances for Liverpool, he has scored only three goals. The latest injury adds another hurdle to a year already full of challenges for the forward.
Impact on Liverpool’s Attack
Isak’s absence comes at a difficult time for Liverpool. Mohamed Salah is away with the Africa Cup of Nations, and Cody Gakpo is not expected back until early next year after recovering from a muscle injury.
This leaves Liverpool with limited options up front, relying on Hugo Ekitike—who has five goals in his last four games—and Federico Chiesa, who has seen little playing time this season.
Liverpool’s Premier League title defense has already faced turbulence, though the team has climbed back to fifth place following a five-game unbeaten run in the league.
January Transfer Window and Team Strategy
With Isak out, Liverpool may explore the January transfer market to strengthen their attack. Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo has been linked with a potential move to Anfield, which could provide additional firepower.
Isak’s injury may also influence Mohamed Salah’s future at the club. The Egyptian star has recently expressed frustration over his relationship with Slot, following benchings and a brief Champions League exclusion.
Liverpool will now face the challenge of maintaining their momentum without one of their key forwards. While Isak focuses on recovery, Slot must find alternative solutions to keep the Reds competitive in the Premier League and Champions League
