Abraham Accords Expansion Trump Hopes Saudi Arabia Will Join

Abraham Accords Expansion

Trump expects Abraham Accords expansion and hopes Saudi Arabia joins, but regional opposition and Israel-Palestine tensions make progress uncertain.

United States President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about the potential expansion of the Abraham Accords, suggesting that Saudi Arabia could soon join the historic agreement that normalized diplomatic relations between Israel and select Arab nations. Trump made these remarks in an interview aired on Fox Business Network.

“I hope to see Saudi Arabia go in, and I hope to see others follow. When Saudi Arabia joins, I think many others will too,” Trump stated.

He described the accords as a “miracle” and praised the United Arab Emirates for signing the deal, emphasizing its role in promoting long-term peace in the Middle East.

What Are the Abraham Accords?

The Abraham Accords are diplomatic agreements initially signed in 2020 under Trump’s administration. They formalized relations between Israel and countries such as the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan. The agreements were widely hailed as a breakthrough for regional diplomacy.

Regional Challenges to Expansion

Despite Trump’s optimism, the path for further signatories faces significant obstacles:

  • Israel’s Military Actions: Over the past two years, Israel has escalated its operations in Gaza and the West Bank. It also carried out strikes in several countries, including Qatar, which triggered a strong backlash in the Arab world.
  • Arab and Muslim Solidarity: In September 2025, a joint session of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned Israel’s military actions and reaffirmed solidarity with Qatar. Nearly 60 member states participated, emphasizing a united stance against further Israeli aggression.
  • Public Opinion: Surveys indicate limited support for normalization with Israel. In Saudi Arabia, 81% of respondents viewed the idea negatively, while in Morocco, approval for the Abraham Accords dropped from 31% in 2022 to 13% in 2025 following the Gaza conflict.
  • Arab Peace Initiative: Saudi Arabia has reiterated its commitment to a diplomatic approach that ensures a Palestinian state as a precondition for recognizing Israel.

Trump’s Vision vs. Regional Reality

Trump maintains that the Abraham Accords could still pave the way for lasting peace in the Middle East. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “Greater Israel” ambitions, ongoing Israeli military operations, and resistance from key regional players like Syria and Hezbollah pose substantial challenges to the expansion of the pact.

While Trump hopes Saudi Arabia’s participation will set a domino effect in motion, regional political complexities suggest that any expansion will require careful negotiation and a resolution to the Palestinian issue.
