Wiz Khalifa Romania arrest: Rapper sentenced 9 months for smoking cannabis on stage, but extradition from the US remains unlikely.
American rapper Wiz Khalifa, real name Thomaz Cameron Jibril, has been sentenced to nine months in Romanian prison after smoking cannabis during his performance at the Beach, Please! festival in Costinesti last year.
Initially, he was fined 3,600 Romanian lei ($829) for possession, but a Romanian appeals court overturned the fine and ruled he must serve the sentence in custody. The court cited that his public smoking sent a “message of normalizing illegal behavior” and could encourage drug use among young audiences.
Authorities revealed that Jibril possessed over 18 grams of cannabis and consumed some on stage in front of a large crowd, mostly young fans. He later posted on social media that he did not intend to offend and promised to avoid similar actions in the future.
Romanian criminologists note that extraditing Wiz Khalifa from the US is highly unlikely due to his wealth, connections, and the complex legal status of cannabis in America. Meanwhile, the rapper continues to perform internationally and promote his marijuana brand, highlighting the growing tension between local laws and celebrity behavior.
Cannabis remains illegal in Romania, although some US states have legalized recreational and medical use, creating an interesting legal contrast.
