This year\u00a0could\u00a0be a genuine turning point for inclusion,\u00a0reshaping\u00a0how schools understand and meet the needs of every learner.<\/p>\n
The government\u2019s white paper promises stronger\u00a0support for children\u00a0with SEND<\/a>, while\u00a0Ofsted\u2019s new inspection framework\u00a0places\u00a0inclusion at the\u00a0heart\u00a0of leadership,\u00a0curriculum\u00a0and\u00a0behaviour\u00a0judgments.<\/p>\n Despite\u00a0years of commitment to inclusion, the system\u00a0still\u00a0falls\u00a0short.\u00a0If\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0serious about closing the widening attainment gap for\u00a0pupils with SEND and\u00a0those\u00a0facing disadvantage,\u00a0we must\u00a0design\u00a0inclusion from the outset.<\/p>\n At Ark,\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0learned you\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0bolt-on equity\u00a0\u2013\u00a0it\u00a0has to\u00a0live in everyday classroom practice. By\u00a0prioritising\u00a0quality first\u00a0teaching through\u00a0Ark Teacher Training<\/a>\u00a0(ATT), and pairing it with an inclusion first\u00a0mastery curriculum<\/a>,\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0narrowed the gap for our children and helped hundreds of other schools and trusts do the same.<\/p>\n Without rethinking the curriculum itself, reforms risk delivering high ambition on paper,\u00a0but little\u00a0meaningful\u00a0change in the classroom.<\/p>\n Too often, inclusion is framed as an add-on:\u00a0something that sits outside the curriculum, or something teachers must \u201cdifferentiate\u201d into existence.\u00a0This\u00a0is\u00a0unsustainable\u00a0and\u00a0disadvantages the pupils who need the most support. Learners\u00a0should not\u00a0be asked to squeeze themselves into a curriculum that was\u00a0not\u00a0built with them in mind.<\/p>\n Many schools have embraced inclusive teaching principles, including the strong\u00a0\u201cquality first teaching\u201d (QFT) practices that we champion at Ark.\u00a0But\u00a0QFT\u00a0can only succeed when the curriculum provides\u00a0secure\u00a0foundations: clear progression, specified\u00a0knowledge\u00a0and coherent sequencing. Without these,\u00a0teaching\u00a0becomes\u00a0more reactive\u00a0than transformative.<\/p>\n An inclusion first curriculum ensures\u00a0all pupils\u00a0can access ambitious subject content. It requires us to think at the design stage about learners who are vulnerable to underachievement, not as an afterthought.<\/p>\n The ways humans learn are more similar than different, and\u00a0adaptations that support pupils with SEND \u2014 clarity, sequencing, explicitness \u2014\u00a0benefit\u00a0every learner.<\/p>\n Too many curricula leave core knowledge\u00a0implied,\u00a0making it\u00a0difficult\u00a0for teachers to\u00a0identify\u00a0the gaps that hold pupils back.<\/p>\n When knowledge is\u00a0clear, sequenced\u00a0and\u00a0connected, teachers can adapt\u00a0without reducing ambition, and\u00a0pupils stay on track for long-term success.<\/p>\n Much of\u00a0this work\u00a0is\u00a0subject-specific. In\u00a0English,\u00a0regular fluency checks and structured rehearsal\u202fcan\u00a0identify\u202fdisengagement\u00a0early.\u00a0In\u00a0maths, representations, for example with pictures or physical objects, help pupils see underlying structures and prevent misconceptions. Without clear\u00a0links between concepts, teaching becomes\u00a0fragile,\u00a0and pupils\u00a0fall\u00a0behind.<\/p>\n Regular\u00a0assessment\u00a0is vital\u00a0\u2013 but only when we act on it. Strong curricula illuminate prerequisite knowledge and\u00a0identify\u00a0what is non-negotiable for future\u00a0learning,\u00a0giving\u00a0teachers\u00a0the confidence\u00a0to\u00a0prioritise\u00a0depth over pace, and to intervene conclusively.<\/p>\n When the curriculum does this heavy lifting, teachers get their brain space back.
